We have Ndidi, Drinky, James and King already& that's if we sell Mendy. We don't need 5 CMs as we don't have European football.

Just because he's had a good loan at Barnsley doesn't mean he will be good enough for the squad. Amartey would of stood out just as much if not more at Barnsley too. Also he offers us cover in 3 different positions not just 1. Centre mid, Right back & Centre back. Having a couple of Versatile players is key In a squad.

We need better midfielders than Amartey as 2nd choice though. Amartey can stay is he's 4th/5th choice, but he won't play. He's 22, he needs to be playing regularly.
sphericalfox Posted 15 June 2017 Posted 15 June 2017 All this bs about not having European football, so that means we should ship out? We've the need for a strong first team and the need for solid backups with a good cup(s) runs to supplement this. Amartey is versatile and whilst not 1st team material yet, he's had literally had one season under his belt coming from the Danish league. He's not done so bad in my view, and yes he's got plenty to work on, but another season to do that and then make a decent judgement.

Yes, European football means more games so your squad needs to be bigger to compensate. We can basically play the same team ever week this season.
Webbo Posted 15 June 2017 Posted 15 June 2017 I rate him, if there's room in the squad and he's happy to stay I'd keep him.

We can do, but if Shakey plays the unrelenting Plan A this season once more then we'll need to rotate at some point as suspensions/ injuries/ or fatigue kick in.
martyn Posted 15 June 2017 Posted 15 June 2017 I think Amartey has shown enough to prove he can be a decent player but, given we have signed one centre half and might be targeting another, and given that Shakespeare has already talked up Mendy and James, it may be that he is 5th choice as a CB and CM in the coming season. He is definitely not a right back either. Unless someone offers silly money, I'd look to loan him out to a Championship club with a view to playing as a centre half. If he has a good season, we can consider him as an option again as Wes and Huth will be another year closer to retirement/the end of their useful shelf life. We've seen numerous times before that as a fanbase we are generally too quick to dismiss players as not good enough.
jayfox26 Posted 15 June 2017 Posted 15 June 2017 I personally don't think we should be writing Amartey off so soon. Last season was his 1st full season and when he was playing (before Claudio was sacked) the whole team was really poor so he couldn't be singled out. I think anyone would have struggled to look good playing alongside Drinky last season. Im still not sure what his best position is, either cb or cdm but hes definitely not a rb
foxes21 Posted 15 June 2017 Posted 15 June 2017 A loan to the championship would be best for all parties. Let him play a full season at CB and see if he makes any progress.

I'd make it 6 months. If he is playing a blinder bring him back to us... improving but not enough? stay on loan. Playing crap? Sell
UPinCarolina Posted 15 June 2017 Posted 15 June 2017 Loan Amartey, keep Mendy. Sell in January or recall?
Strokes Posted 15 June 2017 Posted 15 June 2017 I don't mind him, he slots in a number of positions and I think he will get better.

I agree he plays several positions but does he weaken those positions or maintain their strength? It's a question for him to answer really but, as yet, I'm by no means convinced.
ARM1968 Posted 15 June 2017 Posted 15 June 2017 Keep the kid. We don't really need the money and to me he looks like a real prospect.
Marshall Cockney Fox Posted 15 June 2017 Posted 15 June 2017 Is he the 2017 Patrick Kisnorbo? Just needs the chance to prove that he's really an ok centre half mascarading as a shoddy midfielder.

I have not seen you post one positive thing, EVER. Cheer up a bit and give the lad a chance. He's a CB and he's not played one game there.
Bluearmyfox28 Posted 15 June 2017 Posted 15 June 2017 I think people honestly forget how young Amartey still is. Imo he has potential to be in the mould of a Yaya Toure/Wanyama in the middle of the park.
Buzzell Posted 15 June 2017 Posted 15 June 2017 Would love to actually see Amartey at CB for a full 90 minutes.
Dan Posted 15 June 2017 Posted 15 June 2017 He's never really convinced me. He's only young and does probably fall victim to being played all over the place but I can't really see what his strengths as a player are. When you compare it to Ndidi who is even younger and has come in as one of our better players it doesn't read well.

I am against such loans, we keep him then he knows and feels part of the club.Plus hes versatile, so any back 6 position he can Make a name, cameo, and cover. Shakey will now know where he fits in.This forum in contrast is unique that all posters get nose v twisted, every season, When trying to make silly bold statements, about the individual players. He'll get game time, at HIS club which is more valuable for all parties.Loans prove nothing, other than getting injured players Back into the grind, and younger players like Lawrence can develope. He has to want more, expect more, importantly more so from himself. Loan is a posters easy lazy way out, instead of staying hard and wanting the fringe players to not only knock, But batter the door down for 1st team football.Loans interupts growth and motivation.
