Should Chilwell get more game time?

http://www.dailymail.co.uk/sport/football/article-4847346/amp/Envy-drives-Ben-Chilwell-right-wrong-shootout-defeat.html

At the end of this article Chilwell mentions that he has had talks with Shakespeare over his game time. Saying that he wants to be playing more.

Im of the opinion that Gray and Chilwell should be given more game time this year. Fuchs isn't getting any younger and its highly probable Mahrez will leave next summer, therefore it makes sense in my mind to be giving these players game time and allow them to make mistakes while we still have top players to fall back on if we need to score a goal or  tighten up at the back with 20 minutes to go. Young players aren't going to improve without game time and we need to start putting some faith in them like other teams do with their own younger prospects, looking at Tottenham with Kane, Alli etc. And Everton who played against Man City with Holgate, Calvert-Lewis and Davies all starting.

What are people's thoughts?

He's not ready defensively, really do think he would benefit from a loan to the championship

Even though teams like Liverpool have been after him? He's too good for the championship. The issue is he isn't getting enough game time to make mistakes and learn from them.

Fuchs is making more mistakes recently as well, letting runners in behind him and getting beaten to the byline by some skill moves. People overlook it though because he has Morgan and Maguire or Morgan and Huth at Cb who clear up his mistakes instead of Fuchs and Bennalouane like Chilwell had at the back end of last year or Bennalouane and wasilewski who he had at Cb in the cup games who aren't as good at covering for a youngsters errors as they aren't as good as our first choice.

Also Fuchs will probably have 1, max 2 more seasons with us while Chilwell could have 10+. I will happily take losing a few points in the short term if it meant we have a quality premier league lb for 5,6,7 seasons.

Should have got someone in to do a backup job this year while Chilwell went out somewhere and played every week. Far to good to be a backup player, but so is Fuchs. Handled poorly by the club tbh, the lad needs games

Agree about game time, and suggested he needs a loan to get competitive matches under his belt, not u23.

He's not ready for taking over at lb, and never will if he doesn't get games.

While I think a loan would be best for Gray and Chilwell, we don't have any back up for the wing or lb if they go which is the problem. It's a shame we couldn't keep Schlupp in that sense as he could have filled both roles to a certain extent.

5-3-2 as a left wing back.

That would be ideal for him as his attacking play is the strongest area of his game at the moment, as the left sided cb will give him more cover it will reduce the effect of any defensive errors he makes.

He seems to be tailor made for this role. Not strong enough defensively for LB and difficult to get minutes in that role as it's usually midfielders and attackers who get subbed for fresh legs later in matches, not full backs.

Unfortunately for both Chilwell and Gray, we should always play our strongest team, which isn't them.

However, players get injured and or lose form, so they need to be ready to take their chances. Loaning isn't the answer, unless we can have an immediate recall clause. I suspect however, given how we have strengthened in depth this year, that Shakey might be looking to, not rotate necessarily, but swap odd players in and out, as needed.

All we can do is wait and see.

Definately needs more game time. Whilst I agree that it's difficult to drop someone like Fuchs, it's necessary.  He may be one of our best LB's ever but he's getting on and we need to consider life after him and Chillwell will NOT improve without game time.

I'm not keen on a loan move either. Going down to the championship and playing well didn't really work out for Lawrence as we never gave him a crack at it despite doing exactly what we wanted from him on loan.

Chilwell clearly has bags of potential but it's not just defensively where I think Fuchs is currently stronger. Offensively, whilst Fuchs is less pacy and dynamic than Chilwell, his composure and delivery in the final third is streets ahead for me. The Atletico home game is a great example of Chilwell getting into some unbelievable positions but failing to choose the right option or pick out a killer pass. All that said, I am a big fan.

should have replaced Fuchs last season. Needs to get playing time soon.

The problem is you can't give someone game time in the PL just so they can improve.

IMO he would get ripped apart defensively at the minute, that's not going to do his confidence much good at all.

He's good cover but he hasn't got the experience and nous that Fuch's has just yet.

It's Catch 22 he's our left back cover so we can't send him out on loan but he's a little naive defensively so we can't play him.

It worries me that he still turns his back on the ball instead of taking it full on as Wes would. It's got to the point where we need to play him to keep him......the real question is whether or not he's good enough to be in a top 6 Premiership side.

I agree with you in regards to his shortcomings as a player but it's unfair of us to expect these aspects to improve without game time.  That's like me asking you to learn German but not allowing you to speak it.

Other teams do. Rob Holding at Arsenal. Rashford at United. Calvert-Lewin at Everton. Davies at Everton. They will make mistakes but that's how you find out if they're up to the task or not in the long run.

We won't know if they're any good by playing them against Sheffield United and Derby or giving them 20 minutes in a loss away to Man Utd.

IMO he must stay and edge himself in front of Fuchs. Loaning out is not the answer.

Those clubs don't drop better player to play them though, they usually start because at the time it's the only option.

Even if they did, its much easier to give game time when relegation isn't on the cards.

We need to get ourselves into a position of strength points wise, then we can look at giving them game time.
