IMO he would get ripped apart defensively at the minute, that's not going to do his confidence much good at all. He's good cover but he hasn't got the experience and nous that Fuch's has just yet. It's Catch 22 he's our left back cover so we can't send him out on loan but he's a little naive defensively so we can't play him. I don't think you watched Fuchs through most of last season. Fuchs is getting ripped apart defensively on a weekly basis. He has a wonderfully dangerous long throw but people seem to ignore that his defensive ability was already disappearing during our title winning season.
Farrington fox Posted 3 September 2017 Posted 3 September 2017 Answering the OP's question. Not yet, looks good going forward but too lightweight and naive defensively. As someone else said, would benefit from going out on loan to a championship side.
Gazza M Posted 3 September 2017 Posted 3 September 2017 At times he looks awesome going forward and has real turn of pace. I just think it's a case of has Shakey got the guts to drop Fuchs and let him learn on the job. He will get better defensively I'm sure, not that he is bad now. As a club, we have got to let go of sentiment of 15/16. For me Fuchs and especially Morgan now need to step aside for the development of the side.
foxes21 Posted 3 September 2017 Posted 3 September 2017 Next season he can replace Fuchs in the starting 11. This season we need our strongest 11 most weeks if we want to challenge for Europe. If Fuchs & other senior players can get us into Europe then we can start thinking about bedding in Chilwell, Gray, Barnes etc next year.

shiv Posted 3 September 2017 Posted 3 September 2017 At the beginning of the season, I said I'd like to see Chilwell start more games as I thought Fuchs on the whole was average last year. However, this season Fuchs has been immense. He almost looks undroppable, which makes it difficult for Shakey. Chilwell needs to be patient though, he'll get his chance.

He isn't ready to play in the team on a regular basis, as he has little experience in first team football, I agree we have no cover, but how does he get experience without playing competitive matches, and we cannot afford weaken the defence

But our only choice down the right would be Albrighton. Gray won't fit or Mahrez or simmo. Back to the same argument why can't the powers that be see we need a right back.
Fox92 Posted 3 September 2017 Posted 3 September 2017 I rate Fuchs and during out title winning season he was superb but since then I've lost some confidence. We seem to concede a lot down that left. I think Simpson's positioning and awareness is a lot better than Fuchs' as a full back. Chilwell looks really good going forward, I worry about him defensively a bit but I think we should be looking to ease him in this season. Chilwell is the future and if everything goes right could end up being here more than a decade.
shen Posted 3 September 2017 Posted 3 September 2017 I'm genuinely thinking Chilwell will never make it as a leftback, much like Schlupp never was one. Maybe as a makeshift wingback, but more likely as a winger really. So for me then it becomes a question of dropping Albrighton for Chilwell.

Then what??? Chilwell playing for Barnsley on a season long loan. We do not have enough resources to loan out players like Chilwell. At his age he should pushing Fuchs. Then he will get game time.
brucey Posted 3 September 2017 Posted 3 September 2017 Seems to me that Shakey has been trying to give him game time while Fuchs is on the pitch at the same time to coach him, which is why Fuchs has been playing at LCB a fair bit. I'd like to see Chilwell at LW more to see if he can cut it there, he did play well the two times he started LW under Claudio. He'll definitely track back more than Gray, and going forward he can't be much worse than Gray statistically.

I agreed we had no cover, chilwell should have been loaned out as part of his development, and a short term back up brought in to cover Fuchs. Chilwell is good going forward, but hasn't learned how to defend properly, were a year in the championship would teach him so much. If he came in as a regular now, he would be destroyed in the premier league defensively, which would do him no good. He's not a good enough defender to push Fuchs, but he needs to be ready for when Fuchs calls it a day
Finn Claw II Posted 3 September 2017 Posted 3 September 2017 Everton, Southampton, Spurs all bring young players through - this argument that you can't do it in the PL is nonsense. gray will play, this season as he is our third choice winger and one of our go to attacking subs. I'd hope at the least he comes on after 60 minutes or so rather than 80. Chillwell needed a move to a Brighton or Huddlesfield on loan for a season. I fear that unless there is an injury to Fuchs he won't play. As a winger he'll get less time than Gray.
Rasmic123 Posted 3 September 2017 Posted 3 September 2017 He's quite a good option coming on for albrighton to play left mid in the current formation when were winning games and want to see it out

He's really not that great a defender, as immobile as Huth, poor in the air and lunges far too often. This poor form does go back to the tail end of the title season.

Yup, iirc he was the most dribbled-by defender last season in the league. I know we like to make the opposition cross, but I actually think he struggled. When Fuchs was shit last season, Chilwell came in and did really well. He wont get better if we don't play him so I say gerrim in the team.

Foxxed Posted 3 September 2017 Posted 3 September 2017 The saddest thing about both Chilwell and Gray is that they're both not good enough to be in the first team but the only way they will get good enough for the first team is through game time in the first team. They're both too good for the championship. And our squad would suffer if we loaned them out to a relegation candidate. To play them, we'd have to be focusing on youth development not winning matches. Gray got some amazing time against united which undoubtedly helped his development. But, to be frank, he didn't help us hold off United. Ideally we'd give them in the 'easier' matches. But when every manager is about five matches away from being sacked, and three points could be the difference between reaching the Europa league, what manager would risk it?
