Formula One is absolute shite. Full of twats, crap spectacle, audience of dullards. Boring as sin and calling the drivers by their first names won't change my opinion on it.

You been binging Drive To Survive again in preparation for the new season?

Very true.

You could say these, apart from the final aspect of first names, apply to horse racing, too - in particular the Ascot and Cheltenham races..

I find it weird how Rugby is held up as being an honourable type sport by people who dont like football when the reality is that its a lot of meatheads decking each other.

Not sure rugby can be held up as an example of anything

I love it. Can’t wait for the season to start next week. The strategy part of it is what I like most. I went to the Bahrain race last year, going to Austin this October and trying for Azerbaijan in April if good flight routes become available.

Think this depends on what youre watching it FOR.

If youre interested in the design of the cars, the technology, the strategy on raceday and the skill of navigating the circuit (if youve got experience of doing single seat track days etc then you get a feel for it) then its interesting.

If its just expecting constant wheel to wheel racing hoping the red one will overtake the blue one, then chances are yes youll be bored.

Not a fan of Lewis, Max, Charles, Lando and co then?

When I see vapid "celebrities" like Jake and Logan Paul making ridiculous money through various means because...well, they can sell snake oil of various types including their own body and mind, it makes me wonder if the Chinese actually have the right idea about laissez-faire social media (or lack thereof), totalitarian that they undoubtedly are.

But I guess freedom includes the freedom to both be a con artist and someone who sadly buys into it, huh?

I worry about the impact of social media and have been for years. I don’t think the human race was ready for it.

Yeah, fair to say. I don't think it's not generating much that wasn't already there, but it is multiplying it, which makes problems.

I find Golf, Snooker, Cricket, F1 the same. I just don’t enjoy them.

At least Rugby has that edge to it. Bizarrely I enjoy watching athletics.

It is pretty physical, yet for example the way the ref is treated is a lot more respectful, he only talks to captains really, and fans can hear what he says over the mic.

Also I watched a Rugby league game recently and that was a lot more athletic rather than an organised fight :)

I've never watched Rugby.  What makes it more "honorable"?

Usually the way both team respect the referee.

Having him miked up so folks can understand the decision making and a VAR system (TMO) that works 99.99% of the time helps with that too.

Oh, and maybe unpopular, maybe popular, I'm not sure, but on topic:

Mic up football refs. Bad language by a player within earshot gets a red card and/or three month suspension.

Yeah, it would be carnage for a few games but after that the players would get the message and supporters would gain from knowing the decision-making process the ref has gone through. Would enable them to be more accountable for any poor decisions too as everyone will have heard, so good all round.

Why worry about the language?

Everything the players say has already been heard by children - from TV, neighbors, school and even their parents.

I'm not worried about the language myself and you're absolutely right that kids would have heard it all before, but I think it would negate a source of potential needless controversy and there's not much of a down side to it.

I’d love for the refs to be mic’d, but I think that asking the players to control their emotions is unrealistic.
Maybe the broadcast crew could edit it, before playing it a minute or so later - maybe even a recap during halftime/full time.  Heck, live TV even has a built in delay of a few seconds, so they could bleep out the language if they wanted to.

Or, the PL could have a subscription service where for a couple dollars a month, you can hear the discussions, unedited and in real-time.  I know I’d be interested.
