Our defence. Good enough?

Just took a look at the Prem goals conceded and saw that we've shipped the 7th most goals in the division. That's 16 goals.

Far from being 'a rock', Maguire and Morgan don't look too steady. We were so suspect from corners yesterday for instance.

Fuchs is looking a little past it perhaps. For me, defensively, Simpson is possibly still the safest, although he's pants coming forward.

We are conceding too many goals...

Is it the back five? Is the midfield too thin? Are we poor defending as a team?

Don't get upset I've dared to ask the question.

Well... 4 of those goals were in one game alone, in an open game at a team we never beat. I'm aware that statistically, that's irrelevant, but it's perhaps worth counter balancing with goals scored by us, where do we rank?

But we've only conceded 5 goals in 7 games to teams that aren't the top 6.

(Obviously like some of our fanbase/all pundits I completely ignore our record against the top 6 because we shouldn't be competing and therefore comparing ourselves with them)

Was quite disappointed in Maguire being out of position for their first goal yesterday; he knows he can do better in those situations.

We were fine yesterday apart from individual mistakes and unfortunate circumstances. Fuchs/Maguire had mares for their first, and I'm convinced that if Iborra is still on the pitch they don't score their second...

We need to improve, especially in the full-back areas, and Dragovic needs to be given a chance. Our defence isn't as bad as some would make out, but there is certainly room for improvement.

Only the top 6 have scored more than us I think

Fuchs is getting worse as he gets older IMO. Like Gray, the only way Chillwell will improve is with a decent run of starts. Hoping his injury won't rule him out for long.

I have a feeling that from January Claude will try out 3-5-2 mainly to incorporate Silva with Iborra and Ndidi, with wing backs.

I duuno it's sunday morning leave me alone.

The full backs are a concern as Simpson has a conference level ability on the ball and Fuchs appears on the way out, but be careful what you wish for. I’m enjoying watching us play, and would rather draw 2-2 than 0-0 scoring nice goals and being entertained than shoring up the defensive side and limiting our attacking players.

A more capable ball playing full back would help no end.

against a team notorious for doing well from set-pieces.

I hated the first goal we conceded because it was easy to defend against and easily preventable.

I'd have been much more annoyed and angry if we'd have conceded against Everton who are known for having no striking options these days and were terribly off form.

I thought at the end of last season that we needed a new back 4 and the only one who came in was Maguire. Imo wes has been our best defender so far but hes getting on in years as are fuchs and simpson. I'd like to see dragovic in a 3 with wing backs. Our lack of pace at the back is worrying but we can't do anything till january. Imo we will create chances but we will concede with the system and personnel we have.

I believe we’re ok defensively, Fuchs will be replaced with a more attacking fullback/ Chilwell soon anyway, possibly Simpson too, and for me yesterday’s front post issue wouldn’t have been there had Iborra not been injured :)

Now we have a new manager I think we could see wholesale changes in the defence.

I really rate Simpson as a defender but how Puel is looking to play it's not going to work for Simpson. There were a couple of times yesterday where we lost the ball in decent positions, or wasn't in that position in the first place. Hopefully Fuchs gets phased out for Chilwell because I think Fuchs gets caught out a lot and it's starting to show more now.

Maguire may be culpable for the odd mistake but hes still young and learning, hes only going to improve with experience. For me Fuchs has become the real weak link and hes only going to deteriorate. Our other option for that position is chilwell and its widely agreed that hes not currently defensively strong enough to nail down that position. So Puel either has to get that coached into him or look at possibility of formation change if we want to be defensively stronger, but then that may well weaken us in other areas. For me the biggest issue yesterday was how the loss of iborra effected us, i actually think we'd have seen it out comfortably had he not gone off, has there been any word on the injury?

Simpson and Fuchs nowhere near good enough, Morgan is past his best sorry to say, Maguire needs to be held back, making to many mistakes by going to far forward.

So youre swapping out the entire back 4??? Who for?

there's no way in hell the whole back 4 was being replaced lol

I don't think any team has done that over one summer so you'd already set your expectations too high.

Two defensive lapses yesterday that shouldn't have happened.

I think Puel's methods and ideas will take some adapting to by the players and in the meantime some problems are bound to happen, but I think he will tighten things up.

Morgan has played well in the last few weeks. Maguire us a good footballer but not the greatest defender yet. He's still young for a CB. Simpson he's a  good defender but put us under pressure at times by his lack confidence/ability on the ball when he pushes on.

I said the same about Morgan last season, but he seems out to prove me and others on this forum wrong, with his solid displays thus far. Almost back to his best imo

I think Simpson’s time is coming to an end as a first teamer.  Would put Amartey there and try and find a first team right back

might as well keep the natural RB at RB as opposed to a player who can sometimes play there while we find a better RB, no?

This time a year ago Wes and Huth were all over the place. I,too, thought we needed to recruit at least two CBs. We know we were after Evans and late in the window brought in Dragovic, he has not had the benefit of preseason.

Wes has been our best defender, Maguire started well but seems to have gone off the boil, ironically after his England call up.

Puel has a reputation built on a well organised defence. His project evolution must prioritise eliminating elementary defensive mistakes. Both Stoke goals yesterday were poor defence. Shaqiri was left in space and had time to pick his shot. There has been plenty of posts on our susceptibility at set pieces and the second goal.

Work needs to be done on the defence it’s frustrating that a number of key players will be away on international duty.
