This.

We were outplayed, but didn’t play badly at all.

The first half the tactics were perfect in terms of closing down their options to pass out from the back. I suspect with Shakey we would have been defending our 18 yard line rather than defending from the front.

The officiating was appalling; it cannot possibly go unnoticed any longer that there is a favourable bias towards ‘bigger teams’.

Even aside from the Kompany yellow card debacle, there was a knee high lunge on Albrighton during the second half; a free awarded not even a yellow given.

Maybe they had been working on it but only told him Friday.  No worries for me Claude seems to be tactically very astute ...    that probably shone through at his interview and got him the job.

Agree... we must assume that puel is not so dozy that if info came to light before ko he wouldnt make adjustments and talk to tbe relevant players.

Mrs foxinsocks is always updating the pointers she gives me... often in retrospect

Imo cp managed this game well

In just a few games he has shut Gray up, put a smile on Mahrezs face and put out a few formations that no one on here would have guessed (let alone the opposition !) ...   very early days but I'm impressed.     Saints fans moaned about him ? ...    fook em !!      :)

He mentioned that it was a pain he only had the players for two days to prepare for a team as good as Man City - I would have thought identifying who is playing where and how we intend to stop them as early as possible would help.

I really can't remember the last time that an incorrect game changing decision went our way.

It evens itself out over the season, they say. Doesn't feel like it to me.

I agree. It feels unfair.

The problem is that you remember the sting of a terrible injustice a lot longer than you remember getting away with one.

To this day, I can rattle off:

- David Speedie's penalty against us in the play off final.

- Erland Johnsen cheating against us for Chelsea to get a penalty.

- Wes Morgan "handballing" it with his face against Liverpool.

- Albrighton fouling Geaseman a yard outside the box in the Champs league.

- The awful luck against Man City away last season.

These and many many others.

The injustice burns.

I hate the injustice.

Pretty much all Man City managers since the Etihad takeover have had unlimited budgets, (as do most who manage the biggest teams) but non have been able to play with the panache that this team has. On top of which his coaching of other players like Sterling has been great. I'll reserve judgement until Pep wins something, but i can see now why all the hype exists.

I suppose it is a bit philosophical -- are you an elite manager if you need to have best talent to win your league? Some people clearly think yes. It is not so clear to me, I guess.

For the level and vision of football he proposes, Guardiola is an elite manager. I can't believe it is even up to debate. You can have the best players in the league and still achieve sod all.

You don't dominate the football world for years and revolutionize football by fluke or just being a "good manager". He lead Barcelona to the pinnacle of football and how he transformed Man City in one year is a sight to behold. Of course that can't be achieved with your average Joe footballer. He has the best ones and gets the best out of them, not every one can do that.

Granted the season is still long and he didn't win anything with City, I however have no doubt that he'll let his print on the PL.

Anyone trying to play down Guardiola's influence on modern football or reducing him to a "he always has the best players" is either biased or completely deluded. This guy is up there with the greatest managers football has ever known.

Eh, name calling doesn't diminish my point. It is self-evident that winning with the best players is different from winning with an inferior squad. Pep has proven he is an elite manager when given elite teams. But that is not the average managerial situation, is it?

Could Pep manage a top-half finish with the resources Sam Dyche has? It is unclear, though I'd love to see him give it a go. But he shouldn't be compared to the 99% of managers who have never been gifted the enormous advantages that Pep has enjoyed for the entirety of his managerial career.

He has proven himself an elite specialist, but he has never had to do the work the average manager does. So let's not pretend he would be an elite manager outside a top team with enormous resources. We simply have no idea.

yes guardiola has only managed big teams and not had to work at the level dyche has

but to anyone who doubts his managerial abilities - id suggest reading Barca:the making of the greatest team ever. there is a chapter or 2 in there which describes the work he does in his office + training ground and his obsessive nature and attention to detail. yes he has a talented team but coaching them to move in sync the way they do didn't just happen automatically

I noticed a couple of the defender's movements were quite backwards when De Bruyne was through and had that great shot; they seemed rather reluctant to stick a leg in effectively in case they didn't get the ball and a foul would've been made.

From what I can gather, it seems the penny has dropped for some of those moaning Southampton fans who maybe would prefer him to their current incumbent.

Think Pep saw Leicester and added a lightning counter attacking element lacking before.   Kompany send off and Mcguire's shot goes in ... different story.  I like that Puel said after the game it will be different next time we play them - i e he thinks we can raise our game.  If we can get Silva in and hang on to Mahrez ( eill we?)  things look promising second half of season and beyond...
