Just to clarify, by several, you mean seven?

I left England in  March 2009. I came back 4 years years ago but it was literally house to house to house and all about visiting family and i didnt get to see anything - it was a short visit.

You must have missed the whole several means seven discussion! What a thread that was!

There had been talk of the other flyover (just in front of Belgrave Gate) being knocked down too, but the amount of objections against any proposal sent that idea into the bin.

Still, that area is better but needs refreshing somewhat.

Take it from a Londoner who only visits occasionally, it is NOT a total shit hole. London is a total shit hole.

Parts of London are fantastic, you have got to agree with that. Loads of history, the river, the old bars, great vibe. A great place to visit for a few days.

Leicester is awful, truly awful, but there is a glimmer of hope with Soulsby spending like mad to create good areas to attract money into the City.

Its working, there is actually a few nice places now, but still not enough to make you want to spend your hard earned in the City.

We prefer to spend our money outside of Leicester as it still feels very poor and you don’t feel great walking around it yet.

But Soulby is the man, not sure people like him as he is in the council and people tend not to like anyone in government or councils. But in years to come you will look back and see how many positive changes he is making to bring Leicester upto levels of other Cities.

Who's we? I feel fine walking round and heaven forbid even spending my money Leicester, I think it's decent.

I think you have got the OP question spot on. What has changed is; it's decent!

Well Said but I’d say it’s More than decent it’s a fantastic city , yes it’s not perfect but no city is .... it’s gone through huge positive changes and they are still happening

My Nana used to say be proud of your home , be proud of who you are and what you are and you can never be found wanting in life !

Really upsets me when local people slag off The city , it’s a proud city with a proud history and we should all respect and be proud of it

I think in 10-15 years time it'll be the dogs bollocks as the radiator liquid parts like Gallowtree gate and Frog Island get redeveloped (hopefully).

Yes it’s getting better, but it’s still somewhere I am looking to move away from as I want to spend my years in the best places possible (within reason).

The “we” by the way is my family, not the royal “we”, just both my and the missus both have a similar view.

We went out in Leicester on Thursday. Thought as there would be loads of Christmas parties around we would try it again. Just for a drink, just so we could take it all in.

Great job done by Soulsby with the ice rink, onto the Cozy club which is great. But the walk from there up through St Martins to the new Slug and Lettuce just made me realise why I want to get away from the place. I saw more homeless than Christmas jumpers, with there being a group of about 12 opposite the Cozy Club.

From there on in, it’s a question of trying to avoid them all.

The Main Street near Lumbers is full of cheap takeaways and Chinese buffets and it’s just not anywhere where I / we wasn’t to spend a night out.

Pubs mostly empty, even on what supposed to be a busy Thursday, we both just thought we would prefer to live in somewhere like Cambridge, Bath, Newcastle, where we wouldn’t trip up homeless on a night out and there be more of a vibe about.

I know now I will get blasted about the homeless, but it’s just not what you want to see when you go out. It puts you off and it’s not for me.

I do appreciate you supporting your home City and are passionate about it though, I can understand that. But for me, there is better elsewhere and I / we want to explore that

It’s not my home city ;)

but I love it like it is

I agree on the homeless it’s a stain on this country that we have people sleeping rough still ... but we should all take responsibility for trying to find a solution to homelessness

No, but I should have done.

You earn your money, you spend it where you choose, and my idea of a night out isn’t dodging the parafins sitting in doorways.

I guess it depends what you compare it with, compared to 50s/60s Leicester it's  a dump with some really horrible buildings, compared to 10 years ago it's  improved a fair bit but we're  still bulldozing decent infrastructure and replacing it with bland boxes you wouldn't give a 2nd look at.
