Haven't we had this thread before? Fuchs for the top half of the league, Chilwell for the bottom half. I'd rather Chilwell iron out his lapses against Stoke City than Man City.

This. So I abstain.

It will soon become apparent to Puel whether or not Chilwell has the ability to develop the defensive reliability required of a left back.

That's assuming he wants to continue with 4 at the back. If he switched to 3-5-2 or 3-5-1-1, Chilwell would probably be fine. Likewise, he could convert to wide left midfield.

If we're going to carry on playing 4-4-2 / 4-4-1-1 next season, it wouldn't surprise me if we buy a new first-choice left back, use Chilwell in wide midfield or other formations and Fuchs moves on within a year or sooner.

i'd love this but he's destined to go to a top 6 club.

like when Alli was at MK Dons, the top 6 vultures were already circling before everyone else cottoned on.

Spurs are already talking with Fulham about a deal apparently.

He's too good for The Spuds!...

Surely he wants to win something in his career?

Chilwell has not been 'abandoned' by what is now a series of managers - so they must have all rated his potential - Puel certainement .

He looks a 'bright' player and, if he's erratic now, then he's at the transitional stage, age-wise, where a proper evaluation can take place over the next year.

But Fuchs is getting to that stage where he's very near 'cresting the hill'. He's been a fabulous asset - very accurate passer down the line - where it's most difficult to pass. He's able to cross the ball very well, wherever it's been possible, The throw-ins have never been the factor which has led to his inclusion in the team - just a very effective add-on*.

If there's a perceived shortcoming in that position I suspect Puel will try to adjust the team to reinforce it until crunch time comes. Having Maguire 'next-door' is a useful support.

*I wonder if that 'skill' is ever developed on the training ground. Just seems that when one player comes along with a long throw it's put down to a physical peculiarity rather than a potentially 'learnable' technique.

I feel cleansed again Gerbold, I'm sure we'll rapidly get back to the he's shit too old or he's shit too many mistakes/inexperienced debate where the solution and precipitate lead to more heated debate ?

Fuchs is still a good full back, but obviously getting near the end of his top flight career.

Chilwell on the other hand is young and developing.  Of course he still has work to do - a lot of the debate on here about him reminds me of when Ashley Cole first broke through - "quick going forward but defensively suspect".  It turned out all right for him though!

A good combination to have I'd say and if he continues to develop Chilwell could be very good indeed - let's hope!

Fuchs all day long and I'm surprised this poll is quite the contest.

Fuchs can defend and he can cross, Chilwell can't do either of those things.

Fuchs should be first choice for now, with a view to Chilwell developing further and taking over slowly over the course of next season or so.

If Fuchs was younger it'd be a no brainer. Unfortunately he's past his prime.

I don't think this season should have a clear winner. Sharing/horses for courses.

I was really impressed with his attacking down the wing while playing as a left back against shefd u. Simpson got forward just as much but was shown up by it.

Use fuchs where we expect to have tp defend more and chilwell when we don't.

In fact, I'd like to see the same with amartey and simpson and it would set us up well for next season and the next stage of transition in our style of play.

The next run of games should suit chilwell/amartey more.

Ps. Wouldnt object to spending big in either position though in the summer.

We will buy a new LB in the summer. Question is whether it’s to be first choice or back up to chilwell. The way the lad is struggling for confidence at the moment, he won’t be doing himself any favours in what is a critical period for him to convince Claude his is capable of being first choice.

Fuchs has nosed ahead after an incredibly close contest. I love the guy but think the writing has been on the wall as far as his defence goes. those saying he defends better than Chilwell aren't watching the same player as me. His long throw, character and experience are great though.

As much as I believe Ben will come good, his defensive performances seem to get worse every week, now given his age etc, I feel that a loan move to a lower standard of football or to another prem team would do him the world of good, having said that we don't have any cover so yeah tough one!

in our back 4 we need full backs that can defend. Thats why i will stick with Fuchs for now. I have full faith in Chilwell but currently he has a lot of improvements to make he is too lightweight to needs to bulk up he gets muscled off the ball a lot.

I wish we could merge them so we had Chilwell going forward and Fuchs defensively rolled into one.

But to be fair Fuchs can't breeze past people like Chilwell can. They both have strengths and weaknesses.

That's basically why Chilwell is best suited to a wingers role.

It's nothing to do with 'boo boys' or 'scapegoats', it's simply discussion about whether we can get a better player in.

If we can't criticise players then whats the point of a discussion forum.

So we can,Support them:P

Fuchs when the team is up against tricky wingers.

Chilwell when the opposition have no wingers on his side, and is more preferred when we are offensive.

I'd prefer Fuchs to take over at the end of Chilwell's runs as well. Which kind of highlights the problem with Chilwell at the minute. In terms of defending and end-product it's a bit Schluppy.
