I can only assume that those suggesting they have only been promoted because the game is at Leicester didn’t watch the under 21 game v Holland.  They were the two best players on the pitch. If anyone else had been chosen it would have been bizarre, especially given one of the vacancies is at left back.

Surely Chilwell does, just to get him around the squad - especially with the absence of Shaw? I think Gray would too.

I agree that they both deserve it and I hope it's because he genuinely believes they should be there. I just hope it's not just a publicity stunt/ convenience factor of the fact that it's at their home ground. I.e. if they do well I hope they genuinely do get the chance to challenge for a place, not just a cameo.

Chuffed for both of them.

Whilst I share the sentiment with regards to Maddison's exclusion, it's clear to see both Chilwell and Gray are back-ups for now, but have been chosen due to their Premier League experience (40 and 81 matches, respectively), and Chilwell is in because of Shaw's injury and the lack of viable left-back options.

Wish them all the best, to a long and prosperous national team career. :fc:

So you don’t think they’re there on merit?

I'd personally say yes, but it does remind me of Ian Walker's token call up last time England played in Leicester!

Leicester fans never change do they. We get three lads in the England squad for the first time in 40 ****ing years and all folks can offer by way of congratulations is "they're only in to flog tickets". So odd.

If that was genuinely the case do you not think they'd have got Vardy to bow out in this game? Really don't have Southgate as the type to go in for taking orders from above. He just believes in these lads - more of us should too.

To be fair, Gray isn't even in particularly great form.

Chilwell probably does deserve it to be honest, but Gray? Come on. You're more cynical than that, admit it. You know they're probably right.

Gray was man of the match last game v Holland under 21. If he wasn’t promoted who should have been?

Chilwell's call-up makes sense given he's had a good start to the season and he fits with the system Southgate wants to play and can be a like-for-like replacement for Shaw.

Have to say I think Gray is a very lucky boy to get the call. Still don't think he's shown the consistency and levels we should expect for a player to get a call up (without our Leicester tinted glasses on).

Think back to the days where we were clamouring for Heskey, Guppy and Izzet to get a call up and only two out of three did (with Guppy never really getting much of a go at it despite our lack of left wingers at the time) - kind of shows the strength of talent in the country now when Gray can get a call up for the senior team.

southgate seems like he works more on performances for the U21s and possible fit into the senior set up than necessarily on league performances, though. not to say gray has been rubbish in the league but for about 2 years now he’s regularly been top notch for the 21s so a call up to a meaningless friendly has probably been coming for a while.

chilwell similarly fits into the system and has been doing well for the youth team.

if it was purely on league performances at the start of the season then someone like deeney or wilson would’ve come in and maybe even will hughes would’ve gotten the nod over gray but as with picks like loftus cheek in the world cup that doesn’t seem to be how southgate works.

Probably nobody off the strength of an U21 performance, to be honest.

Especially a winger when your manager is insisting on playing without them.

Yeah, Gray has been excellent for the U21's for nearly two years now. Probably been England's best attacker.

Some sort of cynicism in me thinks there’s some sort of marketing ploy in there, but it’s a great moment for them both, and for our club. Hope they get game time. More than capable.

Gray may not be in particularly good form for us, you're right. But Southgate doesn't work like that, and how many recent England managers have in all honesty? Whether that's a good thing or not is another matter mind.

You can question the merit of the decision objectively, sure, but my point is that it's so weird that Leicester fans' (and presumably also Englishmen's) first thought about this news is to be cynical about the motive behind it, instead of being delighted about it.

And you're right, I'm usually deeply cynical about owt involving the FA. But it doesn't make sense in this case for me.

well there's no point no promoting anyone, it's a friendly and they will be buzzing off the experience of just being there.

as for gray, he's not just a winger, the U21s have played him up front a few times, as has puel, as well as in the hole or on the wing. I don't think he's been promoted to become our first choice right winger for the next 10 years, he just may as well be there for the next 3 days.

chilwell is a whole different ball game, he could become England's first choice left back for the next 10-12 years if he keeps this improvement going. legit.

So this hasnt even sold out or? Thought it would have been sold out quite quick, even with England being the absolute pits to watch.

Put tickets at the £50 mark that's what you get. The FA thought the country fried rubes would stump up whatever they were told, and they're getting what they deserve for being so greedy.

Why is there an assumption that they will play?  Surely both are cover ??

Personally I’d put Chilwell ahead of Rose based on current form

True. Didn't know it was 50. Ripoff.

It has always annoyed me In the past when other managers have picked players on reputation rather than form. This season, Gray has actually been consistently good.

Perhaps I’m the only person who thinks madders, whilst having bags of potential, has some way to go yet ......

plus gray and chillers were the best players for the U21 on Thursday .......

I think Sir Gareth thinks this also.

I’m just gutted it’s not a TV... since when did friendlies get taken off ITV?

Also, I remember the last time England played at the Walkers you could just buy tickets from the club, now you have to register with England seems more complicated than necessary.
