Loftus cheek dont play football anymore so no point him playing for england.

Being on Chelsea's books and never playing is basically the same as playing every game for a mid table premier league side.

If Solanke and Tammy Abraham can get England caps, Gray can too.

I think the point people are making is that non of them three should have been capped.

I mean fair play to them but I agree with people slating the decision. I’m also against Maddison getting one yet, he’s played 4 premier league matches.

Who would you have selected instead of Chilwell and Gray?

edit. Sorry, it’s just Gray you would have omitted. Who would you have preferred instead?

Excellent and well deserved. Will Chilwell be tasked to stop Shaqiri? Baptism of fire but I think he will be OK and Gray should add a  bit of creativity up front. Great opportunity and potential for 3 LCFC players on the pitch for England.Has that ever happened before?

if the squad was being picked from scratch there's a chance Chilwell would be in but Gray wouldn't, they would have picked someone else but Southgate intends to use the U21s as a sort of reserve team, Gray was already in the training complex so adding him to the main squad could be done instantly and he was the best attacker in the U21s

We won a penalty shootout for a start, the mentality of England changed in an instant.

Vardy, sadly was up against our chosen captain who bludgeoned 5 goals in the opening 2 games against dross and was always going to be picked. Vardy also picked up an untimely injury vs Colombia which effectively hampered any further meaningful contribution. I do think Vardy is under valued by a lot of people in the game but we are even seeing at our own club that if you don't set up as a counter attacking side then he'll be a passenger at times. He's up against Kane who scores 30-40 a season and is the poster boy of England, and as you've said the biggest annoyance was the reluctance to see if they could both play together with a Maddison or Shelvey type player in behind feeding them.

I think you're right. I don't in anyway begrudge Kane (partisan team allegences aside) as I think he's our country's number one and always appears to carry himself well outside of the game. As for Vardy, I think we've watched him improve and add things to his games as he's gone on. I also think he's more than capable of playing in a 2 with Kane, how many times last season did we see him busting a gut down the left to deliver a superb ball into the box with no one on our team seemingly having the presence of mind to get there? I think you could have relied on Kane and he'd think it was Christmas! Why couldn't Southgate see this or is there none so blind as those that don't want to see? Vardy will no doubt adapt to our newer style of play when it gets up to speed.

Maddison is an exciting prospect and like Maguire, it makes you wonder why the so called bigger clubs didn't see the potential,  possibly too busy looking for someone with an exotic name ... long may it continue. I'm not saying wrap him in cotton wool, but Maddison needs to be brought on gently and not be thrown in too deep too quick as he's still adapting to the higher level. I think Puel acknowledges when he's fading and substitutes him for his own good.

why not? Rose hasn't been starting for Spurs where as Chilwell has been in superb form and its a friendly and Southgate knows what Rose can do

No he wasn’t, him and Chilwell travelled across from Norwich.

Agreed - plus the fact that Chilwell has the potential to be a better player than Rose.

Great news for both. They've both worked so hard to improve since last season. Well deserved.

When was the last time a someone developed city academy when on to play for England?

Can we all just drop this nonsense please? In Southgate's time as England manager he's given caps to Tarkowski, Pope, Maguire, Pickford, Keane, Loftus-Cheek (while he was on loan and playing well at Palace) etc. as well as having now called up Chilwell and Gray.

The fact that Loftus-Cheek who was playing regularly at Palace went to the world cup and Barkley and Drinkwater didn't tells you all you need to know.

I understand in some way what people are saying about Gray but, on the other, he has been England U21's best player in recent matches and, if the best player from the U21 team is as little deserving of an England Cap in a friendly as some on here seem to think then it sends out a very poor message to our young players.  I hope he smashes it as the young folk say.  X

I have no idea why but I do have a feeling that by March, Vardy will be back in the England set up, hopefully by then Chilwell, Gray and Maddison have joined Maguire in being regular call ups

The lack of quality English strikers is frightening, I wouldn't be that surprised.

I agree and I think March is when the qualifiers start so that's why I said then, I also think Vardy will miss it

That fact that Sturridge and Welbeck are both still part of the squad despite, let's face it, being rubbish for eighteen months is very worrying.

ruben neves started in portugal’s “competitive” game tonight after 4 similar games, if you’re good enough you’re good enough.

Can’t help feeling ChilliGrayGate is a bow to Leicester as we are hosting the game. I am pleased for sure and it’s terrific for our club but I think it shows the lack of options the National team have at the moment.
