Collymore Posted 4 January 2019 Posted 4 January 2019 Puel has been here long enough now to look at some stats. One that caught my eye was total goals scored in a game... We last scored more than 2 in a Premier League match on the 22nd September 2018 V Huddersfield (only one this season) before that, 9th May V Arsenal at the end of last season. This is a bit of a half glass empty topic so far as we have stopped the flow at the other end too I do a miss hammering a team by 3 or more though...
StanSP Posted 4 January 2019 Posted 4 January 2019 I love that we used to be able to attack teams and play a more expressive, creative, free-flowing kind of game but times have changed and I've made my peace with that, so to speak. I'll gladly win 1-0 and secure 3 points with clean sheets as opposed to concede more and not always outscore the opposition...
Mehrez Posted 4 January 2019 Posted 4 January 2019 Agree in the sense that there’s nothing like sticking 4 past a team but in a league as unpredictable as ours I don’t see the problem in taking the lead and shutting up shop, opening yourselves up looking for another pointless goal is asking for trouble
The Doctor Posted 4 January 2019 Posted 4 January 2019 Also the 5-4 defeat at Spurs... We've scored 4 away from home on 3 separate occasions under Puel (Southampton, West Brom and Spurs). Our attack this season could be better, we've scored 25 (11th best), but we're adjusting to a post Mahrez world and I think the issue is overhyped (we've scored more than wolves and no-ones talking about them being weak in attack)
fox_favourite Posted 4 January 2019 Posted 4 January 2019 Whoop. Let's create another Puel, but rebranded. Here's a question...score more goals, but lose more often and be in a relegation fight or keep our current position? If I remember rightly we had quite a few 1-0 wins when we won the title? No one complained then??
lcfcsnow Posted 4 January 2019 Posted 4 January 2019 I posted similar concerns here, we don’t create enough to score many and average less than a goal a match for the past three months

I am for sure, I don't dislike him, we should be able to talk about the Leicester manager on Foxestalk, never had a problem in the 15 years previously discussing managers subjectively in the past.. I just noticed this stat and thought it might be a discussion..

How have we possibly out scored them?

Legend_in_blue Posted 4 January 2019 Posted 4 January 2019 Been watching the Tranmere game tonight? Watch us put 8 past Newport on Sunday...
RumbleFox Posted 4 January 2019 Posted 4 January 2019 Thank god, I was just reading this forum thinking "if only there were another thread to have a dig at Puel". X
Foxxed Posted 4 January 2019 Posted 4 January 2019 We don't win games by more than two goals. Puel out.
Ric Flair Posted 4 January 2019 Posted 4 January 2019 Puel isn't a defensive manager, but his style of football if played by a team that isn't suited to it appears to be boring, slow and negative. He doesn't want that though, he wants control over games so that opposition cant hurt us in return. Last season we on several occasions scored 3 or more times under him, but with Mahrez in the team this was much easier. I expect to see Puel try and strengthen our wide players and forwards as he's said himself today we haven't been clinical enough. Barnes coming back is a start. Go and get that lad from Villareal and we'd be so saucy.

I just noticed this stat and thought it might be a discussion.. It's not a lie though; most threads started are about something he's doing wrong, or threads are pushed in that direction. There's no issues with discussion, this topic has just been over-discussed, there's just little point opening new threads which will inevitably be a "Puel Out" vs "Puel In" thread, we have enough of those already. It's a good point to make, we score less but concede a lot less too. Just a new thread isn't needed for it
StanSP Posted 4 January 2019 Posted 4 January 2019 I actually don't mind this thread. There's a bit of substance to it and it's hardly lambasting Puel that much to the point where it's derogatory or insulting. It's more observational than anything else, from how I read it.

It's a good point to make, just having seen every topic with "Puel" in the title, it'll fall into argument over him being sacked or not.
Ian Nacho Posted 4 January 2019 Posted 4 January 2019 When we won the league didn't we win about 6-7 games in a row 1-0

Ric Flair Posted 4 January 2019 Posted 4 January 2019 1 minute ago, Ian Nacho said: When we won the league didn't we win about 6-7 games in a row 1-0 Yes and it was a clear sign of how teams were becoming so wary of us that they would try and squeeze Vardy and Mahrez out by dropping off and we made sure that we snatched the first goal by any means and then shut the game down. Teams parking the bus is harder for sides of a certain skill set to break down and we are finding that now. They really shouldn't be heralded as great teams in their own right for doing it but we right now seem so panicked when we face teams like that at home that we are our own worst enemy.
Stadt Posted 4 January 2019 Posted 4 January 2019 It's a different to discussion to the other generic Puel out threads, it's not an unsubstantiated concern as its our biggest issue? How sustainable is it for us to score and concede more or less the same amount? One of the criticisms of Puel was that he's (or was) Wenger-lite but I think he's more comparable to Mourinho (obviously not an arsehole like him though). The Cardiff home game for example, we didn't look like a team that had picked up two brilliant wins, reverting back to 4231 was the right choice because a midfield trio of Hamza, Ndidi and Mendy would have been even more conservative but the approach was too cautious. We lack movement in the final third and I'm not sure that's something better players make up for, it certainly does to some extent but our final third play under Puel is certainly lacking. Puel needs to open up and encourage better patterns of play as we're too reliant on individual play rather than team play at the minute. I feel a bit fed up of stating that I don't want us to sack him and IIRC correctly I don't think I've ever said so on here but it's hard to ever feel impressed. It's steady, pragmatic progress which compared to the insanity of the last 10 years is naturally going to feel more laboured than it is in reality.
Guest Chocolate Teapot Posted 5 January 2019 Posted 5 January 2019 Annoying that @Collymoremakes a decent thread amd its just greeted by 'another Puel out thread'. Are we not allowed to discuss the merits of the current team without people thinking theres an agenda? For me, we're not good enough to have a good defence and a great attack, as long as we're winning games i'd rather that than playing well and losing, and if this style works then go for it.
That_Dude Posted 5 January 2019 Posted 5 January 2019 Point worth to raise. However you should take into account that we don't have the same quality in the middle of the park and forward as before. Teams outside the top 6 are also very wary of our ability to counter-attack and Vardy can't do it all alone. Even him went through a rough patch this season. Actually I'm pretty amazed that we did so "well" this season without Mahrez until now.
