What I think is absolutely mad about football now is that we've gone from frowning upon diving, to understanding diving (which I do)*, to actively defending it even despite the fact we have video referees analysing the decisions, to effectively encouraging it.

For all my corrupt shouts (and I think ridiculing the idea is absolutely absurd but we've done it to death) I did read a good tweet saying that Manchester United have simply played a very good numbers game on the sheer incompetence of the system in place, that they load the ball into the box, dive frequently yet because of the whole "clear and obvious error" know that they can't get booked for chancing it, hence why they get so many penalties for obvious dives like that one earlier.

I actually cannot believe we've hit a point in football though where people legitimately think that's a penalty. Just how the hell did we get to this point?

It's such a mess. I hate VAR but if I can give it one credit it really should pile some pressure onto football's governing bodies. It really has exposed so many flaws in the game.

* I don't agree with diving, however, I do think given the sheer ineptness of both officials, and even more so the governing bodies who have allowed this total farce to manifest, I cannot really blame players for diving when it's clear that there is everything to gain from it, and very little to lose.

I know he's a plank but Dyche's rant about football being the only sport you can openly cheat and get away with it is spot on.

Martial gets a yellow at worst in that situation and at best they're in the semis from a winning penalty. It's madness, it's not even debate anymore, there should be no excuses whatsoever for giving that.

It's not just this penalty incident, more of a general point about football and there will be examples when our players do it too. But players throwing themselves to the floor to 'win' penalties because there was some contact is slowly making the sport embarrassing, and then even worse is the managers and pundits justifying it. Players are praised for being clever or smart, sad that certain players first thought is to win a pen rather than try to score themselves.

We all know somebody, either a friend, family member or someone at work who hates football, probably likes rugby and calls football players soft cheating bastards and it's increasingly difficult to defend, find myself just saying I know these days.

I've seen that you can get about 3/1 for a wolves win tonight. Am I missing something?

Sevilla are in blinding good form. Unbeaten in the league since before lockdown, dispatched Roma with ease. It's obviously a one-off game and anything could happen, but they're hot favourites for a reason.

Ah OK, didn't realise they were in such good form. Thought it might just be their pedigree in European competitions. Still quite like that price though

Was it a penalty?

Was it a penalty? Yes.

Would you feel hard-done by as a defender? Yes!

At first, I thought definite penalty. Then on second glance I thought Anthony Martial made a meal of it. I would be annoyed if I was that centre-back.

:wes:

He's an absolute dullard.

His comment makes no sense lol

The whole concept of winning a penalty is wrong. I get "winning" a foul  especially when you're say a defender in a tight spot, you might draw a foul so you don't lose the ball. But you can't win a penalty, or you shouldn't. You're given one because the referee deems you've been impeded. Winning one implies you've played for it, tried to engineer it. Its small things but the use of that kind of language makes it seem more acceptable to force a foul.

Nicola Sturgeon dishing up the wallops to our farmer friends up north, you love to see it.

Chris Sutton is raging.

I put this in the Prem thread but it bears repeating here:

STAT OF THE DAY:

Hull City have been awarded 21 penalties in 15 years.

The same amount Manchester United have been given this season alone.

Bruno Fernandes has the decision making of Demarai Gray but the stat padding ability of Pele. Nobody can beat this guy.

The drop in production next season will be unreal though.

I think we'll be in full on defensive mode tonight. We're 3-5-2 with Traore up front where he's never been much cop the last few times he's played there. Looks like we'll be hoping to use him on the counter as often as possible.

With Jonny out at LWB too, I'm expecting a defeat but hoping for a result. We've shown we can beat anyone earlier in the season, but I think it's going to be another game too far for us.

Just to clarify the clubs name is "Manchester United Football Club", not as it seems at the minute "Manchester United 1-0 Bruno Fernandes penalty".

Poor penalty but yet again VAR not doing its job on two counts. GK was NOT (Walton talking shite as usual) on his line and the guy that cleared it was encroaching.

Sevilla by far the better side. Wolves relying on some Traore magic on the break.

Ian Darke telling us Sevilla are in all white (with red socks) and believing the yellow card was for Traore. The piped in crowd noise offering Norwich's On the Ball City. Savage just being Savage.

An amateurish set-up.
