I was just reflecting on something similar, a very unusual scenario, at the latter end of the season, everyone, except Spurs fans wanted us to win. Usually there'd be a divide between supporters, last season for example a resonable split between preferring Liverpool or Man City etc. In 2016 everyone was rooting for us, another quite remarkable element to a remarkable season.

I know a few in N********m that where thoroughly besides themselves with grief.

I had an email from one to tell me that we still we're not as famous as NottsF. I laughed it off but having seen him since it was clear that he wasn't joking.

It was a little shame that Ranieri didn't retire after that season.

Nevertheless, he's an LCFC legend of course and will always be highly-regarded in the sport for the rest of history.

Clattenburg was a disgrace, “wanted to let it pan out” or whatever rather than just doing his job. Is it really beyond the pale that refs are corrupt if one has openly admitted to something grossly unprofessional?

Spurs should have been down to 8 or 9

I still get goosebumps when I see that video of the lads going mental in Vardy's gaff. Just magical.

Along with the birth of my daughter and that last game v Everton, that was probably the best day of my life.

Just a personal thing but I hate all the references to Spurs and them bottling it or whatever. I feel like it detracts from our story when people bang on about Spurs.

Never understand the Spurs distraction, especially from our own fans, during that whole summer and after..We seemed to mention  them more than our own team, & players...Weird Type of euphoria...:S

As I said on another thread, I'd prefered to have won it at Old Trafford. Would've been lovely given they dominated the PL era and we've all grown up with annoying Man Utd fans.

It still is one of my favourite away days, even Man Utd fans seemed pleased for us having chats in pub pre game, but if I'd change anything it'd be to win it there and not during a game that didn't involve us.

Technically we did win it at Old Trafford, and Wes Morgan's goal was the goal that clinched the title. TV scheduling meant it played out the way it did.

It panned out the way it did though. And I wouldn't swap that Hazard goal for anything. It's such a part of our life now.

Honestly if someone came up and said to me "you can go back in time and win it at Old Trafford", I'd still keep the night of Monday 2nd May 2016. It was beautiful.

Not sure why he's playing dumb about this given he has already come out and admitted to fixing the match?

The only explanation that seems feasible is he wanted Spurs to come back and win either through some sort of allegiance or outside pressure either professionally or monetarily. Of course it could be he just wasn't as good a ref as he thought he was.

Clattenburg's handling of the game could've had serious consequences for the destination of the title. Allowing Tottnum to play on with 11 players kept them in with a chance of a winner (and they did have a big chance towards the end). That would've given them hope and momentum to win the final 2 games and apply maximum pressure on us.

I was fearing that scenario for every minute after Hazards goal (and especially during the 6 minutes of stoppage time). Had the worst happened we would've been outraged but the powers that be would've just shrugged their shoulders and done nothing.

Its all history now and gives the story even more intrigue.

Did Clattenburg actually say

“I allowed Tottenham to self destruct” ?

If so..a stroke of refereeing genius imho. lol

Mark Clattenburg: I allowed Tottenham to self-destruct against Chelsea in 2016

  •  04 December 2017Mark Clattenburg and Eric DierMark Clattenburg booked nine Tottenham players against Chelsea in 2016 - the most yellow cards ever handed to one team in a Premier League match

Former Premier League referee Mark Clattenburg says he "allowed Tottenham to self-destruct" when he refereed the 2-2 draw with Chelsea in May 2016 as Spurs conceded the title to Leicester.

Spurs needed to beat Chelsea to retain any hope of winning the league.

Clattenburg says he "went in with a gameplan" so he could not be blamed by Tottenham for losing the title.

He booked nine Spurs players in the bad-tempered match, but now says he could have sent off three players.

Chelsea and Tottenham received record fines from the Football Association following the game, while Tottenham midfielder Mousa Dembele was banned for six games for violent conduct against Chelsea's Diego Costa.

Speaking to NBC's Men in Blazers podcast, he said: "I allowed them [Spurs] to self-destruct so all the media, all the people in the world went: 'Tottenham lost the title.'

"If I sent three players off from Tottenham, what are the headlines? 'Clattenburg cost Tottenham the title.' It was pure theatre that Tottenham self-destructed against Chelsea and Leicester won the title."

Asked if he helped to "script" the game, he replied: "I helped the game. I certainly benefited the game by my style of refereeing.

"Some referees would have played by the book; Tottenham would have been down to seven or eight players and probably lost and they would've been looking for an excuse.

"But I didn't give them an excuse, because my gameplan was: Let them lose the title."

Clattenburg took charge of the Euro 2016 final, as well as that year's Champions League and FA Cup finals.

In February, he left his job as a Premier League official to become Saudi Arabia's new head of referees.

Clattenburg says he had to change his style of refereeing when he took charge of European matches.

"The English style of refereeing is different," he added.

"I had to referee differently when I went into Europe because none of the top players in Europe would accept some of the physical contact that went on in the Premier League - but that was the theatre, that's what people loved.

"They love a tackle, they don't want it punished."

But what if they'd scored?

He's very fortunate they didn't win. Had he let it all go on and a player who should've been sent off scored the winner and kept the season alive, he may've had questions to answer.
