The cases across the most comparable European countries yesterday were pretty grim reading:

France: 34988

Germany: 28489

Italy: 24901

Even Belgium had almost 5000 cases, scale that up to populations similar to the UK, Italy, France etc and that's 30K ish cases there as well. Spain much better with 2874, I don't know what the restrictions are currently in place there.

Pretty clear to me that the UK handled things very badly at the start but are doing much better than our peers now.

One thing that stands out is that their death figures still seems relatively low in comparison. We were recording far more covid deaths when our case numbers were comparable. You've got to think that their way of recording deaths is much different.

We have one of the strictest lockdowns in Europe. I'm not supposed to leave my local area. Added to that one of the worst excess death tolls and economic slumps.

Hubristic comments are mind blowing.

The authorities would tell you that our current lockdown has been more prescriptive and strict due to the Kent strain.   The Europeans will be telling their populations that this third wave they are now enduring is because of the spread of the U.K. strain ....... no one knows for sure so excuses abound ......

Or we're a very unhealthy nation with high levels of obesity, asthma, diabetes and vitamin d deficiency.

As far as I'm aware it is.

I find the triumphalism weird as they are basically going through what we went through a few months ago.

Or both

We have one of the highest excess death tolls in the world, so I think the method of recording isn't that relevant.

Agreed. I think its a mixture of an unhealthy and fat population and the method they add the covid deaths (within 28 days of catching it).

But lets be honest...this country has tons of fat older people which is exactly the type who struggle with it. That definitely the main reason I reckon.

I don't know how relevant this will be (I suspect somewhat) but when you go to mainland Europe it's really noticeable how many more people smoke and smoke heavily.

This country has hardly any difference in obesity rates than in Germany.

I looked into that too, there doesn't seem to be too much in it. Their asthma rates also similar and a they have a higher percentages of diabetics among the adult population.

Yep looks like you're right. Wonder what is making the difference then? People in Germany locked down and socially distanced better? Does the UK have a higher BAME population that are obese...which seems to be a double whammy against Corona.

The increase cant just come from dodgy numbers though surely because as someone mentioned our excess deaths from the previous years is much higher than other countries.

I think Germany managed to avoid an initial big spread and I'm sure I've read a lot of their early cases were amongst younger people, not the elderly.

France have announced they will only give the OAZ vaccine to the over 55's. Hold on, I thought it was 'quasi-ineffective' in the oldies?

More mixed messages to the French citizens. What a mess they have brought on themselves. Couldn't make it up.

Macron’s attempt to look tough for next year’s election may very well have destroyed any chances of his re-election. Could prove horrifically damaging in mid-term and I feel like the French electorate will do a much better job of holding their government accountable.

More for the politics thread but I wonder if we will see the front nationale make it to the run off again ....

I think that a lot of it comes down to the uk going down the route of "died within 28 days of a positive test", which must the most inaccurate way of measuring the true effects of the virus, whereas,  i suspect that the German way is "a person died on that day, at that time and the course of death is this", so there's no questioning what a person died of.

5 day beer festivals don't exactly help with that.

If someone was hit by a bus and died but they had recently contracted Covid, I am sure that would be classed as a Covid death based on these ridiculous measures!
