Not sure what you are saying here - that an HCA is not useful until they complete all training available to them?  These are not roles where you complete a course before you start, they are trained on the job no?  My mum was one for 30+ years.

Sort of person who eats Dunkin' Donuts while reading the Financial Times. A bit niche, but definitely contemptible, in my view.

Almost 40K cases in France yesterday and their vaccine roll out is pitiful.

Struggling to feel sorry for the anti-vax loons, tbh.

The cases across the most comparable European countries yesterday were pretty grim reading:

France: 34988

Germany: 28489

Italy: 24901

Even Belgium had almost 5000 cases, scale that up to populations similar to the UK, Italy, France etc and that's 30K ish cases there as well. Spain much better with 2874, I don't know what the restrictions are currently in place there.

Pretty clear to me that the UK handled things very badly at the start but are doing much better than our peers now.

How much longer do you need to learn to make beds, serve meals, talk to patients, wash and dress patients and take temperatures & weight figures?

The NHS workers on here would know the specifics better than me so hopefully one of them responds.

Likewise my old dear has been one for over 15 years so far. Usually they get trained on the job and work towards Care Certificates etc. I think a lot of them go from working in care homes to working in the NHS.

When dust has settled, I hope Ursula and co. will explain why they allowed cases (and therefore deaths) in the EU to move upwards at a time when the UK's figures are very much in the reverse direction. (Maybe Nicola Sturgeon might care to reflect on this situation, seeing as how she and her party want to align themselves with Brussels.) It's hardly surprising that the German newspaper Das Bild carried the headline 'Dear Britain, WE ENVY YOU!' last month.

Or it's the UK's fault for not exporting vaccines.

Only thing guaranteed is it won't be their fault. They're perfect in every way.

There is one simple reason, vaccinations. I am pretty sure that the third wave in Europe is down to the fact that the variant is spreading and was it not for vaccinating so quickly here in the UK, we would have faced the same problem. Let's not forget that just a few months ago, we were reporting over 60K a day. Add to that the fact that people have had enough of being locked into their homes causing less following the rules in those countries.

FYI - not sure where the Germany figure comes from as I read just over 17,000 the previous two days. Which is 3-4,000 more than last week. 3,000 people currently in ICU which is starting to rise again. Deaths around 200 a day but again, this will rise again as cases go up. Until those countries start vaccinating more they will be struggling.

How is the vaccination roll out controlled within the EU. Are Brussels in charge of it all and they determine which country gets what and how many or, is it up to each member state to purchase their own vaccine and distribute it to their own people.

I was saying HCA’s DONT have to be ‘trained’ for 6 months before they start the job.

They generally come into services and are trained on the job

Where did you get 6mths from?

Oh fair enough, apologies then Col.

I know it takes a certain amount of time to complete their certificates (12 weeks or so), and then you have COVID issues aswell, so thought 6 months was long enough. Either way, the Gov have had plenty of time to secure new staff for the NHS and it doesn't look like they've bothered.

I can categorically emphasise mate that your last sentence couldn’t be further from the truth.

Fair enough, I can only go on what my old dear tells me, but she's been on the sick herself since last year so it may have changed in the past few months.

Not sure that is the reason though, were Britain not already in control of their own medicine department even without relying on the EU. It seemed Britain always had their own special ways even when in the EU.

I can only imagine the bigger countries have more of a say but there will be some sort of "fair" distribution although I am not close to details on it all. They seem to have messed up in supplier relations that's for sure.

Yeah at the end of this you'd probably break it down into two main phases, pre and post vaccination roll out. Europe was better than the UK pre vaccinations but the UK has blown the  EU away post vaccination roll out.

The figures were from the Google coronavirus tracker btw, easiest place to get multiple numbers but apologies if they're inaccurate.

Spot on.

No need to apologise was just double checking. Mine were from German teletext! ARD which is the German BBC equivalent and those figures are reported by the RKI (which is the German equivalent health hub who post the stats). I have no idea about any of the other countries though.

Pretty sure once this settles a bit, member states will want a full investigation into the vaccine rollout to see what went wrong.

I suspect that we would have gone on our own anyway col ..... we had a history of not going along with EU strategies and programs ....

We have one of the strictest lockdowns in Europe. I'm not supposed to leave my local area. Added to that one of the worst excess death tolls and economic slumps.

Hubristic comments are mind blowing.
