World Football Thread 20/21

Amazing reports coming out of Barcelona.  I’ve read that, even after exacting over £100M in wage cuts,  they missed their January payroll and will likely miss February too.  It’s increasingly clear, some of this push for the European Super League is actually coming from desperation, not strength.  If Barca have indeed bullied their way to bankruptcy, well, it might be necessary medicine for an out-of-control club and for football in general.

Barcelona are in a ‘desperate situation’ as their finances have been laid bare with the club in serious debt and reportedly at real risk of going bankrupt. Latest financial figures show the La Liga giants’ debt at £1.1billion with £648million due in the short term while £236million has to be paid to banks by June 30. El Mundo claim they are ‘on the verge of bankruptcy’.

The report also highlights the fact that 74 per cent of the club’s revenues go to players’ wages – a figure that exceeds the league’s 70 per cent limit. Furthermore, it is stated by Cadena COPE that the Barcelona players were not paid their wages last month, with this payment covering the second half of 2020. The Barcelona squad usually receive their wages in two payments each year, one in June covering the first half of the year and one in December covering the second half.

Barcelona will also be worried by the huge sums still owed to other clubs. Barca owe a total of £112million. They still owe £26m to Liverpool for the signing of Philippe Coutinho in 2018. Ajax are due £14m for Frenkie de Jong while Bordeaux are owed £9million for Malcom. Barcelona also owe money to Gremio and Bayern Munich for the deals involving Arthur and Arturo Vidal respectively. Neither player is at the club anymore.

“The financial situation at Barcelona is absolutely desperate,” journalist Guillem Balague told talkSPORT, explaining that some of their huge debut can be paid off in stages. “But the urgent, urgent debt is about €700m,” he added. “It means they haven’t been able to pay the full wages of the players. They get paid in two statements, and the December/January one hasn’t been paid fully!

“So, how do they sort that out? Well, some say that perhaps by selling some of the assets of Barcelona, that could be players and it could be part of the club. But it’s a very complicated situation that the candidates for the presidency, with elections on March 7, perhaps don’t feel brave enough to discuss at this stage. But big, huge, decisions have to be taken for Barcelona to survive this.”

Wow! 98th minute winner! Literally last minute of stoppage time for the winner. Palmeiras 1-0!

Wasn't quite last minute given the ball had barely been in play for the majority of injury time that preceded the goal.

Damp squib of a final, unfortunately.

True!

Listening to the commentary and Tim Vickery mainly, sounded like it was expected to be cagey and cautious, and just how things are in games like this.

Tends to be a fair few goals in Libertadores finals which makes them so watchable (granted this is only the second year it's been a one-legged final and poor games are arguably likely to stand out more given its now a singular showpiece). The time of year thanks to the pandemic definitely hasn't helped, the Palmeiras' players shirts are absolutely wet through!

Marseille are a mess

They always seem to be.

I mean, don't get me wrong, their fans are nuts. Probably the most nuts in Europe's top 5 leagues.

But the situation there always seems to be chaos which I can only assume is a product of shit owners?
