On the subject of odd sayings, one that my Grandma often came out with when I was a kid: "Well, I'll go to the foot of our stairs!"

She'd say that to express astonishment at something she was told. I found it hilarious, particularly as she was quite a melodramatic character, so made melodramatic hand and face gestures to accompany the saying.

Also, the news itself was never particularly dramatic. One I remember was her mate up the road waving and shouting "Hallooo!" at a bus, in a way Grandma deemed socially demeaning.

She had some inherited social aspirations, I think, as her mother had been quite middle-class and her father had come into some money, but had then spent it on whiskey so the family had dropped down the social league table.

Just after WW1, as a young woman Grandma had a clerical job at Boot's. One day the manager asked her to make a cup of tea for a visitor, but she walked out of her job in a huff, saying she "hadn't been brought up to make people cups of tea!"

One that I always remember from being a kid was my mum would always say "What's that got to do with the price of cheese?"

Usually it was said when you said something she wasn't interested in or said something that had no context to the conversation you were having. A weird one I'd love to know the origins of some of these phrases.

My mum has this saying right, and it’s when she sees people on TV, usually minor celebs that just seem to pop up on everything - “oh they’d be in if they fell in!”.

Does anybody else say this/have you heard it before? What does it even mean?!

My parents say it all the time.

Never heard it before, but does it mean they're "in" with the right people?

They keep getting roles/work because of who they know or because their face fits, not due to any personal merit?

As for "fell in", maybe the idea is that they'd get a role for these reasons even if they just fell in through the door or fell into a pond or something? :dunno:

I think it was like for example, say Songs of Praise was coming to your local church, that'd be the sort of person who'd turn up and put themselves on the front row just to be on the telly, might never have been to church before in their life. That sort of person.

Phil Collins was actually a really good drummer. Who'da thought? ('cept maybe a Genesis fan)

I once met guy while hiking in Andalusia who claimed to been Genesis' drummer before they were famous.

No, it was before he joined.

I was sufficiently curious to look it up - his name was Chris Stewart.

Phil Collins is a guilty pleasure of mine, great musician. Shame that due to his ill-health these days he can barely hold a drumstick.

Yes, I've reading about him and listening to some early Genesis as a result.  80s solo Collins , I knew more about but less so Genesis, particularly Gabriel era stuff. So it was quite a surprise for me to hear how proficient he was with the sticks.

His son has been on drums during recent Genesis tours, big Phil has to sit down and sing these days. Check out Phil's performances at Wembley in the 80s, live aid etc... plenty of videos on YouTube. Drums, piano, singer... man of many talents.

My first ever (completely unintentional) interaction with a "celebrity" on social media and its James Veitch responding to a throw away comment I made after discovering he's been accused of sexual misconduct by quite a lot of younger women. Awks.

I have no idea what the etiquette is here. My impulsive side is telling me to engage and my common sense is telling me to not go near that with a barge pole.

Lilt is a totally underrated drink but you cant seem to get it in many places.

Agreed.

I think because you can't find it many places it makes it taste ten times better. Like Fanta Lemon in Spain

Given the situation, my first thought would be “avoid litigation”. Anything after that depends what you’ve written and feels like a judgement call.

Oh no, all I wrote is expressing surprise at hearing about the allegations. I'm not in any sort of danger.

My impulse wasn't to be abusive or to spread any gossip it was more to ask questions.

I'm still probably sure the smart thing to do is nothing. Still, was a weird thing to see when getting a notification this morning.

The fanta lemon in spain also has plenty of sugar in it compared to the sanitized drinks we now have in the UK dissapointingly.

I would take a fanta lemon over a beer on a hot spainish evening

Asked in the group chat if any of my mates wanted to come with me to see The Streets in January - one of them messaged back saying he doesn’t know who they are.

I’m baffled here, I thought everyone knew who The Streets were?!
