And going on what they’d produced at that level, how were we to say anything otherwise. You only need to look in the threads of both when they signed to see that this was the general consensus.

What more do you expect? Sign someone with a crazy transfer fee on double the wages Thomas will be on when we aren’t in the position to do so, in a position that wasn’t necessarily a problem because being fine at the level we find ourselves in isn’t ok?

So you don't think we can scout a single left back for less wages then Thomas is on and for a reasonable fee.

not a terrible player (recently)

probably happy to be a backup player

homegrown so if we do sell for any amount this is a good thing

unlikely to be on big wages.

as @Stadt pointed out this also fits the pattern of poor transfer / contract dealings, but I'm willing to be more positive about this one in isolation

Just from a quick search online, as a reference.

Average Salary: Second-tier league of English football is known as 'EFL Championship' or just Championship has average player salary of around £11,000 per week which is higher then some of the other top divisions in European football.

Not far off an average wage then.

Far from outrageous, as this thread would have had you believe.

People talking about being able to sell him on lol We've wanted rid for how many years now and nobody has come in from him aside from two loans moves to Middlesbrough and Sheffield United. And even they weren't bothered after.

I’d say there’s probably about a 30% chance he leaves on a free anyway lol

Oh definitely, probably higher than that if anything - more in hope than expectation

No problem with this. Good to have local lads around the place. He’s the type to never complain and you need that in a back up full back. Up to him if he wants to step up and lock down the left back spot but assuming the wages have been reasonable, then why not.

We might have a few years in the championship and he’s more than capable at this level

Comparing Ricardo at right back to Luke Thomas at left back is like comparing Kate Middleton to Bonnie Blue.

Whoever turned down money from Hoffenheim and has given a new contract (TO 2029!!!) needs sacking.

His attitude over the last five years I have on good authority is shocking.

Anyone saying they agree with the new contract “on the right wage”, I assume means it’d be ok if he’s on £400 a week, not £40k?!

He will have fashioned a career with the sole strength of being able to kick a ball left footed. He’s not good in the air, he’s not a good tackler, and looks and behaves on the pitch like a pre pubescent boy.

Other than that, completely agree with the new contract.

Agree with this with the exception of the attitude point as I don’t know. He’s awful

Ok so unless he develops at pace in the next couple of years he’s always going to be a back up player. But I can’t really see the issue with this. In the grand scheme of things the contract value will be small and as a home grown player if we do go on to sell it’s 100% profit for PSR purposes. I really don’t get all the negativity. Personally I’d rather watch a team of Luke Thomas’s that give it everything every week than some of the overpaid egos we still have in the squad who couldn’t care less about the club.

This is a young local player that was in the starting line up for our first ever FA Cup win a few years ago. I just don’t get the negativity personally.

Average player, poor attitude, on a fortune, sign him up Rudkin.

We will never learn.

In saying all that, I don't think this is THAT bad of a deal, 4 years is pretty mental though.

Has he got a poor attitude? I’ve not heard that anywhere.

Knew this would happen.  But given we've gotten rid of a few unwanted players this summer, I hold out hope that we're just improving our hand for an eventual sale.  That or hope he improves massively.

Hoffenheim wanted him for €5mill in Jan, so maybe we're trying to preserve value if there's similar interest.
