Club ‘preparing an amount of around €2m’ to make ‘first bid’ for Leicester City player
By Tom Coast - 31st December 2020

Signed from the Right to Dream Academy in Ghana back in January 2018, Kamal Sowah has yet to make an appearance for Leicester City.

He has, however, featured a number of times for Oud-Heverlee Leuven (OHL for short), where he has been on loan ever since he arrived.

Sent there to get some experience under his belt, the 20-year-old has done just that, and following their promotion to the top tier, he’s having his best season to date.

Incredibly versatile, the young Ghanaian has featured in a number of positions for the Belgian club, scoring six goals and assisting another four in 19 league games, which has caught the eye of Saint-Etienne in Ligue 1.

This is according to GhanaSoccernet, who reported on Wednesday that the French club are ‘preparing an amount of around €2m before making a first bid’ for the Leicester City loanee.

They add Sowah ‘recently signed a long-term contract’ with the Foxes after impressing for OHL, so it remains to be seen if they accept such a small fee for the player.

Signed a new long term contract in the summer so the club most likely see him as a good enough prospect to tie down until he is able to get a work permit

€2m will be nowhere near enough to get him

@Bonanza how big a miss would he be if he left?

Hmmm, is a buy back option for a linked club allowed? Assuming not. A season or 2 in that league would be a great experience for the player though, and a good barometer of how good he really is/can be.

He's our player, not Leuven's and this is a link to St Etienne so we could install a buy back from them?

We wouldn't sell for that price, worst case if we don't get a work permit is we will transfer him permanently to Leuven and let them benefit. His progression will have been the plan, with the long term goal of us getting him involved with us, otherwise we wouldn't have signed him.

Claude knows a quality youth prospect when he sees one, and almost certainly watched him when he was here. And Kamal seems to be getting on well at Leuven. Absolutely keep, and develop him at Seagrave when he comes back!

We actually signed Sowah (after a trial period) and sent him off to Leuven for his first loan whilst Claude was here so he will have definitely watched him and will have been getting reports about his loan move as well

Be a while before he can be involved with our first team due to work permits so would likely stay at Leuven for a couple more seasons but definitely a youngster we should keep hold of

2mil. St Etienne are clowns after the BS with Little Wes. Do they have any other talent worth pursuing?

I actually think these new rules that come in to force from today make it easier to obtain a work permit for him than before. The Belgian top league is classed as one of the better leagues and he plays every game for them. Brighton are confident they can now get a WP for Percy Tau who is on loan at Anderlecht. Will be interesting to see what happens come the summer.

Obviously the fee is too low here for someone touted to be a really good prospect, and with Sowah being based at OHL for a few years it's hard to assess how the club see his future with us but this type of news is always positive. Interest from a top flight club in one of our youth prospects.

The likes of Knight, KDH, Sowah, Tavares etc. have all been linked in the media for permanent transfers for reasonable fees without having featured massively for the first team. Imo, this is a big step forward and if we can get into a position where we can sell 2 or so academy graduates per year for decent fees, it will give us more wiggle room to strengthen the first team. The new training ground will also help us achieve this too. It's likely we'll have a couple more who can influence the first team like Barnes, Hamza, Thomas and Chilwell too. In turn, we'll also become a more attractive proposition for future talented youth players to join.

Brilliant news, think he is that attacking midfielder/forward that we can have around the squad and not expect to always play that will be a huge asset, especially now there's 9 subs named in a matchday which will likely stay post the pandemic too.

Chelsea have been doing it for years.

He's one of our best players, so I would hate to see him leave in January to be honest.

The big question is: What does Leicester want?

Do they believe Kamal can be a first team player for them in the future? In that case I would keep him in Leuven for at least another season. As a young player, Kamal needs to play football to develop his game. He knows our club, is loved by his teammates, the manager and the fans. Even after several bad performances this month our manager kept faith in Kamal and hasn't put him on the bench. He's almost guaranteed 90 minutes per game. At this stage in his career, Leuven is the best place for him (in my opinion).

If Leicester doesn't think he's good enough to become a first team player and want to get rid of him, than this is the time to do it. €2M is not enough in my opinion. I think he's worth at least €4M at this moment.

What do you think?

There has been many a fine player who has played in the Belgium league, does Sowah have the ability and potential to play as a very good PL player in the next few years?

Tough question.

Kamal has been with us for 3 years now. To be fair, his performances in his first 2 years were mediocre at best. This season he has been superb, although his performances have dropped in our last couple of games. He needs to get back to the same level he was in August, September, October and November if he wants to be considered a potential EPL player.

Look at the 3 Belgian players at Leicester. They were all key players for either Anderlecht or KRC Genk who compete for the championship every year. If Sowah want to become a LCFC player he first needs to become a key player (for a full season) at OHL.
