Smith, 16, made his debut late last season, having appeared aged 15 in a friendly in August 2020.

Surely if he's pushing for their 1st team he'd be better off staying there a few more years than languishing in our academy. Is the coaching at 16 here really that much better/useful/developing than the chance to actually play competitive football.

Agree.  Getting 'Beagled' here could harm his progress severely.

Doesn't mean we shouldn't try and secure the signing now. Get him here and then work out the correct plan for him. Rodgers isn't daft, he knows how shit our U23's are ran and signings like this will be signed off by Rodgers. You only have to see the role he played in Vontae Daley-Campbell signing.

He's got a surname as his first name. Unless it's a double-barrel? For that reason, it's a no from me.

James Justin could help him settle

With signings like this and the two lads we've recently acquired from Utd and Liverpool, along with being linked to Doig from Hibs and the other lad from Dundee Utd, it looks like we are making a real effort to fill our youth teams with talent and put our new training facilities to good use.

You maybe  correct but I'm still seeing no change despite Rodgers being here nearly 2 years which is a long time in a managerial stay.

Either way the chance to play competitive football where people's livelihood is at stake strikes me as a better learning situation. He's 16 he should already have all the necessary skills in his locker he now needs to hone them in a real environment if he's any good not playing against other 16 year olds.

But then I think the whole Academy beyond 16/17 years is flawed for most young players. It's too cosy and stinks of stagnation.

I'm probably going against the grain for most people, I just hanker over the old Football Combination Reserves football which served to keep squad players match fit and youth's to play alongside adults.

Totally agree with the return of the Football Combination Reserve football, it had a lot going for it and would be a major benefit in area's you have stated.

Is this really a thing, how many potential stars has beagle destroyed?

Impossible to say unless you interview hundreds of young players and their parents.  So the answer to question is probably  ‘we will never know’.

I suspect if you do this you would get a lot of 'My boy would have been a superstar if it wasn't for...'

You are probably correct.  I am sure BR is  looking at the academy and how it is run.

the question is does he have the clout to do the same with the U23s as that seems to be where the issues start

Looks like one of Spok's teenage sons.

Secret lovechild of Mr. Spock and ex-Man Utd defender Denis Irwin, I thought.

So, genetically a top defender and not prone to emotional volatility. Gerrimmin!

Probably easier for him to stare at the strikers who keel over laugher and hey presto he stops a goal! What a weapons cache he'd bring.

In fact, is it allowed for example if a defender laughed at an oncoming striker to put them off? Would be unsporting? but hilarious.
