If there is a very small plus side to see those houses burning, it's that the core boomer/Brexit/nationalist part of the population will perhaps realise that climate change is a thing, and it will destroy land and habitats here, not just in Africa or the third world. Of course it's probably too late already, but we can at least try.

Never underestimate the power of denial.

That being said, arguments based on self-interest to fight climate change do have effectiveness.

One of the finest science communication channels out there, would recommend it to anyone.

If I leave our loft door open on hot days, the house gets hot. At school, we're told that hot air rises. Well, only if the air above it is cooler! The second law of thermodynamics tells us that heat (or in this case hot air) cannot of itself pass from a cooler to a hotter body. Hot air is less dense, i.e. lighter than cooler air, so from that perspective also, there's no reason why hot air should move upwards unless it's replacing cooler air.

The reason is because it has the opposite effect of what people think. An attic is designed to draw air in through the eaves, to prevent condensation, that's why there's a breeze in the attic, so when you leave the loft hatch open it becomes the easiest escape route for the hot air in the attic, which is going to get very hot because theres a big black thing above it, so consequently the house will fill up with hot air from the attic. You can have an extractor fan but then you need to isolate the air flow from the eaves. Best thing  is to increase the insulation thickness in the attic.

Just to confirm this boomer is not Brexit, nationalist or denies global warming.

On the synoptic/macro scale heat domes, in which a persistent stationary ridge of high pressure/warm air mass can be pushed down compressing the stagnant air and over time heating it further, are becoming an increasingly common phenomenon. In Europe these are formed when the jet stream moves north allowing air to pile up and sink. This subsiding air also keeps skies clear since it lowers humidity. That allows the sun to create hotter and hotter conditions on and near the ground. This lingering air then dries the ground and in the chaparral vegetation of southern Europe, creates tinderbox conditions and the increased prevalence of wildfires that we are witnessing. Furthermore, If the air near the ground passes over mountains and descends, or is drawn in from the high desert and fanned through canyons such as the Santa Ana winds in southern California, the Foehn effect acts like bellows fanning the flames.

Heat domes can park over entire continents and we are currently seeing in Europe. It is entirely possible that similar warm dry air will be drawn north again resulting in similar high temperatures before the summer is over.

There is also evidence that the jet stream might be slowing due to climate change which further fuels their development.

I saw Don't Look Up the other day. It's frightening how such a ridiculously slapstick film at time cuts so close to reality!

Its almost as if the Netflix show was based on the reality of a lot of news shows.

Yeah.

It's just a little worrying about what that could mean going forward, though.

That's great to hear, but misses the point. I too am in my 60s, and I have to accept that a majority of my generation have contributed to screwing up things for the younger generations. Worse still, a majority of that age group want to deny there is a problem with climate change. Plus voting through a Brexit that the youngsters will have to deal with.

Hi. Just wanted to stand aside from those you refer to. Strange that these people do not seem to understand what their children and grandchildren will have to contend with.

Yep. I plus my partner happened to be watching the Sky News coverage in a pub that day parts of London burned. A younger woman passed by us and said "they had years of warning about this, no sympathy". I do have sympathy for folk who see their home burnt down - no amount of insurance will cover the shock. But the fear is we're going to see a lot more destruction, especially if the sea levels do rise.

I'm looking forward to next week's storms. Could see some amazing downpours (warmer air can hold more water).

And still they'll be hosepipe bans.

I've got old cast iron guttering that's got 3 leaks on each join. Managed to grab a roofer to get it sorted this week and am looking forward to enjoying the weather without worrying about the consequences!
