We are screwed as long as china and the us don't play ball.

China fully understands the importance of sustainable and renewable energy sources and is actually a major global investor in clean energy, which is why it allocates large sums towards a growing number of international renewable energy projects and has increased contributions to multilateral organisations. Significantly, its renewable energy workforce outstrips that of the USA. Why? Because it enables the country to tackle its huge issue of air and water pollution, and mitigate risks of socio-economic instability. In 2019, China consumed 14 million barrels of petroleum per day. Most of this was purchased from abroad, largely shipped from OPEC countries. Price fluctuations make this foreign dependence a strategic vulnerability even in the best of circumstances not to mention the volatility, uncertainty that we face in the future. Should those imports be threatened via blockades or military actions in the event of war, it could cripple China’s industrial production and wreak huge damage to social stability.

Also, China is also rapidly growing as a hub for active fusion research and is in a race with the USA to build the world's first fusion plant. It also leads the way in internal confinement research.

Just don't read the comments.

I don't have a Twitter account so I couldn't see many of them - but Jeez, some of them make Foxes Talk sound like the Smithsonian in comparison.

That's it then, china and the us are doing their bit, we're all doing our bit. Problem solved.

It’s true that they do care about clean energy - they’ve had a lot of power restrictions this year because they actually can’t sustain enough energy to satisfy domestic requirements.  Hence they are building more power stations.
I’m certain that they believe a viable nuclear fusion solution will arrive before it’s too late ………

The problem is far from solved, since they are also producing emissions from burning fossil fuels in the meantime, and many renewable technologies are in their infancy - but the will is definitely there. In China's case, motivated by the environmental and social issues that I discussed, but crucially, the imperative of cutting external reliance and exploring sustainability in terms of their enormous energy requirements.

Wennington, Upminster, Dagenham and Croydon all having big fires apparently. Wennington looks apocalyptic on Sky News, from the air.

The footage is horrifying.

Grass-fire in MK earlier.

This is pretty scary. I'm about 5 miles away from Althrop house in Northamptonshire.

Charles Spencer tweeted that one of his fields was on fire.

Yes, I'm aware that this post makes me sound very upper class, I'm not.

Very scary indeed.

Thankfully temps are due to drop within 2-3 hrs but already so much damage done.

No one would doubt that if by any chance you're in Kingsthorpe. (Or should that be Kingsthrop')?

It's hard to imagine how vast some of these wildfires are in places like Australia, but days like today really do make you think.

Even the wind is hot, no relief from it at all.

Haha would've got a rep, but I'm out!

Kingsthorpe ain't that bad. You just don't want to be in Blackthorn!

I'm in a village, called Bugbrooke. Just off J16 of the M1, next to the mill.

You know Northampton?

Yeah - not a great fan of the town, but the county has some wonderful countryside and villages.

Absolutely. The town centre is awful. So are some of the surrounding areas, but some of the villages are incredible.

Same as everywhere I guess.

I kind of miss Leicester, but then I realise how awful some areas are.

Same here, but in a smaller scale.

Northamptonshire has some beautiful villages.
