He really surprised me last year in how good he was dropping in to the space and linking up play, receiving the ball from Vestergaard. His pace and fitness to then turn and run from deep really gave defenders a lot of trouble not knowing whether to follow or when to pick him up. It created loads of room for KDH, Mavididi, Fatawu and Ndidi. Thing with all of that, though, is that Cooper doesn't really have our strikers doing this now. Mavididi is cutting in narrow and we've usually got a 10 occupying that space. To that end, we benefit a lot more from Vardy's sense of timing and his movement in and around the box than we would from Daka's link up. Last year I think there was a good argument that we were a better team when Daka started even if his finishing was more wasteful than Vards. I don't think the same would be true under Cooper, personally. Still better backup than Edouard on current evidence though. Edouard looks likes someone that drew the short straw to be here. I get that that's probably closer to the truth than we'd like but he's not going to inspire any manager, here or elsewhere, to play him if he doesn't pull his finger out somewhat. Paninistickers Posted 6 November 2024 Posted 6 November 2024 I'm convinced he's the type of lad who with clear instructions and the confidence that he won't be dropped if he sticks to it, he'll go do it for you. Just good old fashioned man management at times to coax the best out of a player. The rest, namely finishing in Daka's case, will come once the player is fully confident 2
JimJams Posted 6 November 2024 Posted 6 November 2024 (edited) Well Cooper has fck all in the way of tactics but if he can get Soumare and Daka playing to the potential we thought we'd signed he'd certainly go up a notch. Putting him at notch 1. Edited 7 November 2024 by JimJams 1 1
Miquel The Work Geordie Posted 6 November 2024 Posted 6 November 2024 You know what they say about Patson, he only needs 5 chances to score. 4

There’s been a lot of games where he could’ve made a difference in the last 20. If not goal scoring then pressing and connecting, and giving more space for our wingers and Facundo. At the moment Vardy is completely out of the game. 1

foxile5 Posted 6 November 2024 Posted 6 November 2024 I was there in Moscow. He was a god that night. He's been utter dug shit besides. Get rid. 1
fox_favourite Posted 7 November 2024 Posted 7 November 2024 (edited) He's an instinct finisher, I think. It's odd as if he has time to think about it, he seems to struggle. When he just goes for it (snapshot against palace away) he's actually a good finisher. I can't work out if that is a confidence thing, or just him as a player that we have to accept. One thing I will say, he seems a very likeable guy. Edited 7 November 2024 by fox_favourite 1
Lambert09 Posted 7 November 2024 Posted 7 November 2024 I think things would have ended differently for patson last year if that leeds goal had counted. A striker just needs a confidence boost to change everything and that moment seemed to be the start of his downward spiral. Hopefully all is forgotten and it’s another fresh start when he gets on. He showed promise when he returned to the team last season, but ended it looking like a competition winner
brookfox Posted 7 November 2024 Posted 7 November 2024 Thought Trump being re-elected would be the strangest thing I witnessed this week (other than the Mings handball!), we’re now heading to the spine of our team being Vesty, Bouba and Daka! 2
Jobyfox Posted 7 November 2024 Posted 7 November 2024 The stock of a player, absent from a poor performing team, always rises. I doubt Patson will be the answer but, I must admit, I’m glad he’s coming back to give us another option. I can’t think that he’ll be worse back up than Odsonne Edouard. He won’t bring quality, but at least we’ll have effort and energy 4

I typically love your posts mate and know you’ll never have a bad word against Patson. But how many times did he actually do what you described to great effect when compared to some of his Sunday league level misses? He’s clearly an upgrade on Edouard though who looks like he struggles to stand up straight. But if Patson has surely shown over the years with us that he is not the long term solution surely? I was very critical of his finishing last year. Previously, despite the public perception of him, he'd always matched his xG and his accuracy shooting was actually pretty decent. He just looked pretty scruffy. Last year he was way off the mark though and some of the misses were genuine howlers. Patson Daka wouldn't even make a top 5 list of my favourite players in the current squad, I just think he's an interesting case study of a player that gets targeted for over the top criticism by a certain section of the fanbase because he fails their "eye test" whilst actually the underlying stats and performances are decent. Players like that give me a chance to talk about stats and the folly of the eye test, before Daka it was Iheanacho, Maddison and even Vardy. 27 minutes ago, SafewayFox said: But how many times did he actually do what you described to great effect when compared to some of his Sunday league level misses? I think a majority of the games he started last year his all round contribution to the team was solid? You could probably pick most of them and find good passages of play he was involved in. At the point he first came back in to the team we'd been struggling for goals, as soon as he did we went on a streak of goal scoring. Not only did he start with an alarming goal and assist per 90, the chances and goals we scored as a team improved which is largely my point. All of this said, even with his undeniable drop in form from about Leeds away onwards, he still finished the year as the second highest G+A/90 of any player in the league to play over 1000 minutes, something like 0.01 behind only Jamie Vardy and way out in front of the rest of the field. It genuinely amazes me that people still think he had a bad year. 2 1

It genuinely amazes me that people still think he had a bad year. I am going to say it (and accept the risk of looking stupid as the season progresses and Patson returns). His finishing last year was not his "norm". We know that by the quality finishing we saw of him of season previous. Brighton for example. The hattrick in Europe. Patson's biggest problem in the PL years was always his movement and strength. I'd say last year he improved massively on both - his finishing suffered as a result. We all know once you hit a rut, it snowballs - needs a couple of his backside.
Finnegan Posted 7 November 2024 Posted 7 November 2024 His finishing last year definitely wasn't his norm, he's 26, he's played a lot of games of professional football and scored a lot of goals. Finishing from a technical point of view isn't his problem. A composed and confident Daka is a decent finisher in front of goal. Unfortunately, he's not been that for most of his time here. He got off to a horrific start with Rodgers extremely poor squad management and he's only ever really recovered in shades. He probably needs to leave. He needs to go somewhere he's The Man again, go build up some confidence where he doesn't have to cope with Vardy's shadow. I'd love him to still turn it around here but I think it's probably too late. This latest injury feels like it came at such a horrendous time for him.
Skidmark Posted 7 November 2024 Posted 7 November 2024 I feel that he's the sort of player who hasn't got the biggest brain. I think Maresca asked too much tactically from hin last season, and he was confused and didn't know his role well. I think if told to just play off the last defender and try to stick the ball in the back of the net he'd get 15+ a season. Cooper's comments regarding him at the start of the season were very much positive, as if Daka was going to be the one leading the line this season before his injury.
