Europa League: v Spartak Moscow (H) Pre-Match Thread

Regarding our corners, I'm not sure which game it was but I think Legia, KDH took the corners from the right & delivered some real quality inswingers. The best set piece crosses I've seen for us for sometime.

Pity it's not American football where we could bring him on just for those

Whilst I don't agree with quite a bit Danny Murphy says, I do agree with his stance on this. If you need several specialist coaches why are you employing all your other coaches? What purpose are they serving, what do they do?

If Kolo Toure, an ex defender can't be both a defensive and set peice coach, why the hell are we employing him, what are his duties? If he can't give good input from his professional career as a footballer then it's up to him to study and work on coaching those aspects of the game. If he can't fulfil those duties, get a new one.

St George's Park and Seagrave are merely expensive buildings with brilliant indoor and outdoor facilities. Both are utterly pointless in terms of financial outlay I would suggest unless you have top quality coaches working within them as well.

Football is ever evolving in becoming more specialised. It does seem a surprise that a top class coach couldn't be excellent at everything but if coaches start to specialise in one area and they then become better at it than the best all round coaches then we've got to move with the times.

We went through a spell where we had 2 or 3 short corner routines that worked pretty well. Not necessarily scoring directly from them but pulled the defence out and put dangerous balls in.

Feels like we need to mix it up again as tbf, Madders put some decent corners in against Arsenal but Gabriel pretty much gobbled every single one up! We’re just sh*t at attacking the ball in both boxes!

....putting a runner on the near post when we have corners might be a ploy Rodgers will choose to use!!!

Stick a big man on the near post, they will have to put a big man near or up against him, it pulls one of their big defenders from a place into an area he does not really want to be. We did for a while change our corner routines by playing it short, it was short lived, but at least someone tried to do something positive.

Understood, but I just wonder how many coaches we have. Presumably we have a fitness coach etc, but what do the rest do? If we were to have a goalkeeper, defence and set peice coach for example,  why can't Schmeichel venture off his line and why are we still so piss poor at set peices both ends? Not new issues are they. With the latter there seems to be no system or drill being adhered to, is just so haphazard.

Normal covid checks, but still can't stop you entering the stadium if you don't have any proof of vaccine / test etc.

I don't think it's an issue anyway but not sure about that. It's a private business and if they stipulate that they wouldn't allow anyone in without proof of vaccination I think they'd be perfectly entitled to.

At the moment they have said they currently wont stop you entering without proof, but will advise it may become a condition of entry in the future - they would make a statement at the point in which it becomes required as well.

So right now they aren't going to be stopping anyone from going in if they don't have proof

We employ him as a defensive coach. So he's a specialist coach. Which means he's not an 'other' coach. Hooray for Kolo.

Who are the 'other' coaches? What do they do? We should probably replace them with specialists like Kolo. Although not like Kolo. He should get the sack because he's a little bit too specialist.

I fear Bertrand is not a form issue. Covid seems to have ****ed him over royally

That's my suspicion but others say he is just rubbish anyway. He did have enough fitness to get picked after his initial recovery, so he must have been passable in training and surely the sports science testing would pick it up, but then again it might get missed given he was presumably meant to be regaining his fitness.

I guess time will tell.

No Maddison and no Barnes worries me that we're going to play a back 3/5 with Thomas or Bertrand which I feel is exactly the kind of set up Spartak would be hoping for.

These are rubbish at the back so I think we'll be just about alright. Think if it was up to me I'd actually go.... 4-2-3-1.... Schmeichel... Castagne Evans Soyuncu Thomas... Tielemans Ndidi... Perez Iheanacho Lookman... Daka.

Gun for them early doors and think about any resting once we're confident it's won. I wasn't impressed by them in Russia and we really have to win this.

He isn't shown as a 'specialist', only Stowell is amongst the others? He doesn't seem very specialist at the moment if defensive because even with Evans and Soyuncu, they're all over the sodding place at set peices and have been for a long while. He must have been on a long holiday 😆

Absolutely no need for the 3/5 bollocks I agree. We haven't got the requisite wing backs for it as we saw against Arsenal. These aren't as good as Arsenal but 3/5 would merely highlight Rodgers negative and cautious approach. If we go out we at least need to go out having a go!
