Leicester City get £20m boost over Chelsea payment as King Power Stadium expansion date mooted - Leicestershire Live (leicestermercury.co.uk)

Quote

At the clubs latest your 90 minutes meeting between fans and supporter liaison officer Jim Donnelly, a question was asked over the stadium expansion and the answer that came back was that work was unlikely to begin before 2026. The green light given to the club from Leicester City Council lasts five years, so work needs to start before the end of 2028.

By the time the work is complete, it will have been a long wait, with the plans to renovate and expand the King Power Stadium first revealed in October 2021. A new East Stand will take the capacity of the ground to more than 40,000.

🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿 Chelsea have reportedly held talks over leaving their iconic stadium Stamford Bridge and moving to Earl’s Court as they seek a resolution to their plans for a bigger stadium, with the current stadium “only” having seats for 40.343 fans. Increasing the stadium capacity is therefore a major priority for the owners, who have begun looking at a new site in west London due to the difficulty of redeveloping the current ground, according to The Guardian.
🔵 It’s said that the Chelsea owners are committed to maximising revenues by building one of the biggest and best stadiums in England, with The Blues currently having the 9th biggest stadium in the Premier League.
🏟️ This has proved to be a problem for the London club, who haven’t been able to compete with the other ‘big 6’ clubs, when it comes to stadium capacity. This becomes evident when looking at the club’s average attendance during the 2023/24, which was at 39.700, the 9th highest in England. Meanwhile, Manchester United had an average attendance of 73535, 82,23% bigger than that at Stamford Bridge. With that, Chelsea had an utilisation rate of 97.2%, leaving little room to grow the average attendance at Stamford Bridge.
💰 Despite this, Chelsea find themselves amongst the 10 clubs with the highest matchday revenue in the World, during the 2022/23 season. In fact, the Blues generated €88 million in matchday revenue. However, this number is still far short of their main competitors in the Premier League, with Manchester United, who also has the biggest stadium in the Premier League, racking in €156.9 million in revenue.

Statement from the Earls Court Development Company: "There is no plan within our plans for Chelsea FC to relocate to the Earls Court site. We have a fully detailed design, shortly to be registered with both local authorities, which prioritises the delivery of thousands of homes and jobs, culture and open space through a well-designed and considered masterplan which has evolved over four years of engagement. This will see development commence in 2026 with the first residents and occupiers moving in from 2030. This is, and will remain, our primary focus.”

Tough situation for Chelsea.  Their current site makes it impossible to redevelop like spurs did, and finding land in west london is close to impossible.

Arsenal lucked out, imagine building a stadium in London for £390 million today.

Spurs spent 3 times that redeveloping their existing stadium.

Life is all about timing.

Generally with these big investments there is no time like the present which our board seem to have ignored.

We are falling behind so many clubs off the pitch.

Apparently so, but they'll probably just go for something like Chelsea AFC.

Or down the PES route and call themselves West London Blues for the banter timeline.

I don't think 40k is enough for us

We've half-arsed everything and reacted late to reality for the best part of a decade now, why would that change with the ground expansion? Can't wait for it to be all-seater with lip service to standing fans while they're at it.

Agree by the way - 45k with the family stand and kop incorporated should be the bare minimum. Tickets were like rocking horse shit against the likes of Watford and Cardiff in the second tier, we could easily fill 50k with people who don't get a look in now if we honestly have the ambition to be playing the greedy six every year.

Just a soul-crushing lack of ambition about everything we do since we won the football lottery in '16. But hey, we got a shiny new training ground that seems to have done nothing for our club besides look nice in King Power's promo shots, so there's that eh?

We aint sold out a home game this season. If it ever happens they really ought to look at pricing and ticketing hoops.

Agree on the second point but we’ve averaged 31k so far this season, which doesn’t seem any different to past seasons.

If it is 2026 then I sincerely hope they put that in the diary and fully commit to it regardless of our situation. I also hope they take the time to look at the project again and make some changes for the better, like upping capacity to a minimum 45k and incorporating the Eon site.

If anything it’s too big, unless they review the ticket pricing structure

100% they are pricing fans out.

Everton might go down as a sellout on paper but there were literally hundreds of empty seats all round the ground, no where near capacity.  A combination of atrocious football and high prices have seen to that.

makes no sense to expand our stadium with our current trajectory. We missed that boat 5 years ago

If we painted stripes on it, or just made the observers stand closer to it, it would appear bigger.

We need to obscure the view of it from far away to make this reality pronto.

Also we could use a complex series of mirrors.

Or put magnifying lenses around the perimeter.

Or only allow children to attend. Everything is bigger when you're a child. Apart from problems and crippling stress; that's bigger as an adult, I think. I don't really remember my childhood apart from everything being really big.

Yeah one reason I don’t go anymore.  Still love my club, but I have no affinity with how football has evolved.

Definitely need to get a crack on with it however much we expand just get it done and like others have said sensible pricing and we will easily sell out each home game
