I think im right in saying Wilf played as a defender for Genk

Yep I'm pretty sure he started at CB there and then was converted into a CDM

Encouraging performance and convincing victory despite the loss of Evans early on.

Team responded well and defended as a unit.

Thomas had a fine game defensively and going forward. Read the game well especially to help set up the 3rd goal.

Maddison and Tielemans were brilliant. Connected well and assists/goals galore. Both took their goals very well.

Most of all just happy we kept a clean sheet too! Castagne nearly did his best to fvxk that right up but Kasper always had it covered .

I don't want people saying 'it was only Newcastle'. That's not fair on the team or Rodgers. If we didn't win it they'd probably get rightly criticised. But we won, did some basics very well, defended to put bodies on the line, were organised and attacked well. Players and staff deserve praise. You can only beat what's in front of you and we did that convincingly.

We did the basics really well as you say and that's what was needed 👍

Glad we don't have to worry about the shocking officiating today.

How does Castagne get booked for a shirt pull on halfway, but their player doesn't get booked for foiling Barnes just outside the box?

Fine if you're gonna set the standard with the early yellow but be consistent with it.

The linesman on our side (West Stand) was absolutely shocking too. Couldn't see things that were closer to him and couldn't make his own decisions.

Pay Youri what he wants.

Not only was he good, but acted like our captain today. Got the players and the fans going.

IMO one of many things that has gone wrong for us this season is we lack a real on the pitch leader. We are too nice and lack aggression. Jordan Henderson for me is an average player in terms of technique, but in terms of leadership and presence, he is world class. If Youri could develop that sort of mentality... well he would no longer be with us, but it would help us out a lot whilst he is still here.

I think some fans would rather we lost than have to listen to goal music.

I was there, in my lounge on the sofa and the music didn't bother me one bit.

We can't have any complaints about the performance today it was far more enjoyable than anything we've seen for a while. KDH and Thomas look like the future along with Barnes.

Soyunchu had a good game, tielemans is back, Madison is bang on form, new boy Daka looking sharp and able to score, assist and carry the ball up the pitch, a clean sheet.

It was a good day.

Good performance against a shocking Newcastle side. Surely they will be in the championship next season!? If they manage to survive Eddie Howe will have performed miracles.

Their style of play is awful to watch.

By the way today at set pieces we were setup a bit differently. About time if you ask me!

It may or may not work out long term, but using the same approach every week was never going to work. Glad we've changed it up a bit.

Tielemans defensive side was quality too. Stopped a lot of their midfield runs with good blocks and tackled. Surprised he played another 90.

I think we still set up zonally at times. We had 4 players in the 6-yard box for one of their corners towards the end of the game.

That's eased my relegation fears considerably. Pleased to see a big reduction in the playing out from the back. Noticeable that Schmeichel hoofed nearly every goal kick. Good to see a change and feel it def contributed to the clean sheet.

Clean sheet but hope we don’t let it go to our heads, it was a relegation placed team after all.

No we mustn’t celebrate a win🙄

It was nice to see us focus on having solid foundations at the back for a change. Still some hairy moments but a massive improvement overall. We have the attacking players to hurt any team

I've been fairly vocal in my belief that Rodgers wouldn't be able to change things around but that has mainly been down to his hesitation and unwillingness to address some of our main issues by making some noticeable changes.

Today he did that.

•We went for somewhat of a diamond but more noticeable than that, there was a distinct effort to play the ball forward quicker and with a bit more urgency at times.

•We played with more energy, and pressed better as a team. Particularly in midfield were KDH and Youri worked really hard for the team.

•Defensively we worked harder. Using midfielders and CBs to double up with FBs to stop crosses coming in.

•From set plays there was a noticeable change in how we lined up. Part zonal/part man marking. Alot more talking going on.

Listen, Newcastle are dreadful and our performance wasn't by any stretch of the imagination perfect. There is still more to work on and even then no garentee that the changes he makes will work but at least he's making a clear effort in addressing the issues that he's been ignoring for far too long. I can get behind his changes not working. I can't get behind making the same errors and poor decisions over and over again like we have been up until now.

Let's hope this is the start of our season really taking off.

Thanks...sums it up for me. Wide midfielders from the right coming inside, whilst Castagne worked hard to give the width made the difference in attack too. Madison obviously and then I'm sure it was albrighton winning the ball in the middle that set us up for the fourth.

We did, but it seemed like the CBs went man for man. The opposition was such that it's hard to really judge what we did and how effective it was, but it seemed like that is how we setup.

Show the team videos of the back line in 15/16! We started off bad at set pieces, but by the end Fuchs / Huth / Morgan / Simpson were the best in the league at defending them.

Some people who hoped we'd lose so brendan gets the sack look like prats

Posted (edited)

This result partly makes up for the disastrous 2-4 home defeat to Newcastle last season. However, we're could still end up with more PL home losses in a calendar year than ever before - 8 so far. The corresponding Sunday last year also saw Maddison on the scoresheet, when we beat Brighton 3-0 at the KP.
