Suppose by some quirk of fate we didn't have the best owners in the world but a Russian Oligarch with close links to an unspeakably evil head of state

 

I'd been deeply ashamed where any honours and or achievements in football bankrolled by dirty money would be utterly worthless

Thing is every owner out there has probably done some questionable things to earn their wealth, including ours. The difference is what those owners do when they have that money and whether they do plenty of good like ours.

 

Even with Abramovich, he's done plenty of good with Chelsea (not suggesting that outweighs all the other crap but it's not all bad).

Perhaps now he could do plenty of good for the millions of innocent Ukranians with the excess wealth he has?

 

He's got to protect his assets first of course by transferring them to a charitable foundation! We must let him get his priorities straight.

Most people if they were given the choice of prison, ending up poisoned or losing their power, will choose to shut up and keep quiet.  I'm not defending Abramovich, but he saw the writing on the wall and decided he didn't want to end up in the gulag or dead, buying a football club gave him some protection.  Our owners have had to do the same, walk the tightrope of internal politics in order to survive, it doesn't mean they actually supported the military junta in Thailand, their friend who owned Man City Thaksin Shinawarta was thrown in jail, they didn't want the same to happen to them.

Whilst nothing is concrete here I think this demonstrates that in order to be a billionaire in Thailand some crafty positioning is required as well as getting some shady people onside.

 

Most football fans won't care. You only need to see the joy from Newcastle fans after being bought by a regime that killed a journalist and is closely associated with atrocities in Yemen. As long as they get a new striker that's all that matters.

 

This week draws to attention the mess the Premier league is getting itself in. Not much that's beautiful about the beautiful game anymore.

Exactly. How many have died in Yemen, up to 100k maybe? Millions more probably displaced. Nothing really made of it in our media, it’s too far away, who cares, so you won’t see Yemen flags outside peoples windows

I read that the average wage earner would need to earn their salary for over 20,000 years to earn one billion.

 

No individual *deserves* to be a billionaire or *earned* that money, and certainly not while there is any hunger or need in the world.  
 

That any billionaires exist at all is a failure of late-stage capitalism and one day people will look back with disdain on billionaires who built penis shaped rockets as toys, whilst poor people couldn’t afford medical care or education.

 

I count the wealth of our current owners in my this criticism of the system, however nice they may be or however well they run the club.

 

The premier league was all about money long before the involvement of Abramovic, or the Man City owners, or of our owners, but allowing football clubs to become the playthings and status symbols of the obscenely rich is not a good thing.
