Ironically he'd probably solve a lot of issues for us. Much more suited to the type of defending that we do, compared to Utd. Him and little Wes would be a fantastic unit.

Literally don't know what's happened to the guy, it must be the pressure of joining under such a large fee and then being made captain. It's turned him to jelly.

 

As much as we joke about him and the media does too, he was a quality player for us and was worthy of getting called up for England when he played for us and then he had a great World Cup. We knew when we sold him we'd had United's pants down with the fee but on the flip side we also knew they were getting a good defender.

I actually think a lot of his problems at Man United stem from his performances being put under the microscope, which definitely are not helped by him being the captain. He wouldn't receive that same scrutiny if he was playing for us. Defensively he's far from perfect, but I don't think he would have delivered quite the disasterclasses of Soyuncu or Vestergaard in the same situation. If he was available for say £20 million or less then I would consider it. Anything more than that then forget it.

Wouldn't suit our style, much like he doesn't suit United, needs to play in a deep line because he hasn't got much pace. He'd be torn apart here. Stick him in Everton or Burnleys team and he'd be worth 100m.

He was good for us for one season. Second season completely average.

 

He hasn't had anywhere near the career to justify the price we got for him.

His second season was poor in comparison to his first but he didn't just become crap overnight - it was almost like because he became a bit of a star at the WC he was already thinking of bigger things when he got back for the next season and his head was gone. A bit like Youri this season. 

As I said, everyone knew he was definitely not worth the price tag we sold him for but it was the only way they were getting him.
