Better than nothing if it’s us.

not convinced it is. He’s not the finished article yet so why would we spend a year developing him and letting him make his mistakes if we get no long term benefit.

loaning youth won’t help us close the gap. The only loans that make sense are for wantaway seasoned pros .. like the lingard deal or youris.

Sadly we might not be able to afford the required 20m or so to prize him away. A loan with a fee agreed next summer maybe, give him a season here, let him settle in, enjoy himself, get used to the place then purchase him next summer under the knowledge that he'll be first choice CB alongside Fofana for the next couple of seasons.

Also allows us to spend the transfer money this season elsewhere, as next summer we'll have a few contracts expiring in 12 months which will free up the money.

Not sure Chelsea will want to loan him to us though, reckon they might prefer Brighton or Southampton.

If he goes to Southampton and we've not made a serious attempt to sign him then I'll start to get extremely concerned we really don't have any financial flexibility which would be a huge concern for our future

HE'S FROM SOUTHAMPTON.  His uncles were star players in a non-league side there that won the FA Vase.

That ... a club's training facilities and staff ... and first team football might be more decisive points than a few pounds more or less.  And will be infinitely more decisive than what some LCFC fans think of Rodgers.

This is about what is most important to a teenager trying to establish his life and career.  The way people on here project their own thinking onto this pulls the discussion way out of shape.

I'd still be appalled if we missed out on our number 1 defensive target to Southampton.

Sounds like De Ligt will end up at Chelsea - along with Kounde. This will surely open the door for Colwill to leave in search of first team football - really hope we're ready to strike on this one if and when the opportunity arises.

If that happens, Chelsea will have signed two exceptional centre backs there

We just can’t compete with this level of transfer

Whilst this is true, let’s not forget we already have Fofana and Evans. Not too shabby imo

This could be one of the dominos that need to fall paving the way for Levi colwin to go to Brighton.

It's all coming together.

I guess the main difference is that DeLigt and Kounde have about 15 years left in them, whereas Evans has 15 months.

Its a potty comparison you’ve made mate

To be fair, mate, I’m unsure why you’re making the initial comparison, between our transfer targets and those of a club with the spending power of Chelsea

The top clubs in the prem can genuinely get whoever they want.... how on earth did we win this league? Its genuinely the most bonkers thing thats every happened!

To make the point that we just can’t compete. And I think the gap is getting bigger at the moment. DeLigt and Kounde are two of the best young CB’s in the world. To get one of these is a coup, but to get both… would be ridiculous.
Im convinced a super league will end up happening

£20m for a player with one years championship experience and Chelsea reserves… the worlds gone mad.

We paid £24m for Maddison 4 years ago after pretty much 1 full season in the Championship.

Hmm but you pay more for forward attacking players who look the biz?

You do, they'd cost north of £30m now from the Championship even after one good season. Guehi was another Chelsea academy defender who Palace paid £25m I think for after a year on loan at Swansea? He's been excellent value so far, got the world at his feet. Colwill supposedly just as highly rated.

Guehi cost £18m

Conflicting reports, other sites have it at £21m with add ons. Either way Colwill for around £20m isn't a significant increase a year later for a similar calibre of player.

World's still gone mad.

Colwill is younger, taller and left footed. Being left footed is a big thing, it helps so much with building the play by having a left footer on the left hand side. That bumps up the cost. Take Tyrone Mings, if he was 2 inches shorter and right footed he wouldn’t have been looked at for an England call up.
