I believe the Recruitment Squad are on field trip down in Southampton for next month.

Been there since last season bout time they got back to work!

I honestly feel like the silence is sometimes a good thing. We’ve been known for a few years now to be a team that doesn’t have much information leaked.

Personally I have faith 🤞

They were getting pissed off with the likes of John Percy finding out information. It’s one of the reasons there was a reshuffle in the backroom. Any information that now leaks generally comes from the club the player is leaving. We like to keep business hushed because we’re now competing against teams that have far more resources than us, and if we’re going to the same player, we could potentially lose out as a result!

I’m sorry to be cynical, but I’m not convinced.

I doubt the likes of Vestergaard, Bertrand or Lookman were coveted by any clubs with more resources than us. Soumare was a relatively early shout but, again, I’m not sure who’d be after him that we couldn’t compete against.

That leaves Daka who might have been a punt for someone, but it would only have been a punt. We were always more likely to offer first team football against bigger teams who, in all probability, would have chucked him into the reserves.

Of course, I don’t know how many players we’ve missed out on who ultimately went to join big clubs, but I can’t help thinking we’d be chasing for very long. Everton, Villa and West Ham would likely be competing more strongly and with much greater ambition - even if it was reckless to do so

Those might be fair points on the first four names but Liverpool were in discussions with Daka for months. They were trying to sort out a few moves to sign him, then we swooped in as soon as we saw an opening.

Yeah I conceded that Daka was probably the exception but, as I explained, the offer from Liverpool was always likely to be one that didn’t include first team football. Our ability to compete was probably much more down to our ability to offer an immediate route to the first team (and probably offering club and player more money) that it was anything to do with: “flying under the radar”. We’re not going toe to toe with Liverpool no matter how quietly we go about our business.

Our business model is to buy players with potential who we then develop into players that might interest the top six and, hopefully, reap the rewards with a decent transfer fee - and then reinvest.

We may well be very good at keeping our interests quiet. Certainly it makes sense to do this. But I would also contend that it’s because we are not after any players that are headline grabbing. The headlines are in the players we’ll sell. I’m sure we’ll see plenty of noise about who’s in for Tielemans, Maddison et al.

Dear Recruitment Team,

Have you by chance got a chap on your ‘to look at list’ named Emanuel Aiwu?  He looks a very good prospect.  Can play CB, RB and DM. Austrian Under 21 International.  Kind regards.

Eze, Olise and this guy. Palace taking a punt on top Championship talent is really paying off for them.

Can't we go after Palaces head of recruitment instead of Southampton's? lol

No thanks, as Crystal Palace obviously have @Ric Flair as their head of recruitment

All they buy is wingers.

This is harrowing, another club worse than us who already have Michael Olise and the best U23 PL2 player bar James McAtee last season in Jesurun Rak-Sakyi who is another left footed right winger.

How do we just sit there and not get involved in taking these very talented players from Derby's academy for dirt cheap. I genuinely don't get what our plan is at times, we seem uninterested in unproven players any longer who represent big risk but huge rewards.

How do you know we didn't try?

EVery player doesn't have a burning desire to play for LCFC.

Close thread. They are not listening to FT.  They are enjoying the sights and hospitality in and around Southampton. They are due back in September.
