I fail to see how that can be justified, if that's the case. To not even get SOMETHING for him, even a nominal amount like £3-5 million, is just tragic. A championship club would have paid that.

Definitely overpaid no doubt but he did a job for us when he arrived. Also had a key contribution to our FA cup win.

It is his wages that are the issue as he is on £80k a week so we still owe about £4m and whatever his loyalty bonus is which would likely be a few million as well

Freeing up an obligation to pay £7m in fees to him, freeing up a squad space to bring in a starting right winger… what’s not to understand?

Exactly. Those saying it is a free transfer need to realise that if we had got a small fee for him and he'd accepted a lesser wage from his new club we would have been liable for possibly the difference in salary and any bonuses that were owing. So if this goes through, still a big if, then we've saved around 4 million in wages and whatever bonuses are owing. So probably near or around any fee we might realistically have got.
