So we have to sign players that will never be close to first team for 10-15 million and pay them 3-4 million a season. Rather than sign young players for a similar amount on less wages who will develop into 1st choide players. I don't know how you can see how things are now and thing that signing average players with no resale value or little to offer on the pitch is still a good idea Astounding. We're clearly skint. It's why we're barely linked with anyone and the players we are linked with would cost **** all. Evans, Soyuncu, Vestergaard and Amartey are out of contract next summer. Signing a 26 year old with Premier League and International experience for next to nothing is obviously not the complete disaster you want it to be. What young players are you talking about? Fofana cost us £30m, Levi Colwill will cost a similar amount, the lad Wolves signed from Burnley was £20m... Young players aren't cheap nor would they be on low wages.
davieG Posted 13 July 2022 Posted 13 July 2022 Southampton fans Here's what some fans have said on social media. Nathan Newington @Newington13: Leicester were actually there for the 9-0 right? #SaintsFC MikeKavs @SFCMikeKavs: Leicester want to play that game again then, eh? #SaintsFC Dean Turner @Turner2Dean: We all know how this turns out #LCFC #SaintsFC Mark @ftbl_mark: We're doing it again and again #SaintsFC That saints girl @DWTheDoctor: They took 2 of our defenders before and look how that turned out Alisha Warwick @AlishaW1709: Why do Leicester want all the defenders who they scored 9 against? Baffling. #SaintsFC #Leicester
Dan Posted 13 July 2022 Posted 13 July 2022 The fact of the matter is if the exact same source had said we were close to a deal with Colwill you'd all be creaming yourselves. It's not to do with the source, just more what you hope. 1

It'll be a minimum of £10mil and a wage a minimum of £50k.

I take your overall point but the two don't have direct link I can't see us signing Bednarek simply on the basis, he takes up a squad spot and that requires Soyuncu or Amartey to leave pronto.
lee7 Posted 13 July 2022 Posted 13 July 2022 I hope to god this is Bullsh*t! An awful defender. How uninspiring

It's why we're barely linked with anyone and the players we are linked with would cost **** all. It's not clear we're "skint", it's clear we have too big a senior squad and can't shift them. It doesn't matter if all 28 or 29 senior players' contracts expire next year, the budget sheet still has to be balanced for this year and in rolling three (I think?) year segments for FFP. But the fact of the matter is plenty of them aren't expiring next year, in fact most of the players we want to ship on have years left and are a burden to the squad. This signing would be another one who's just a "squad player" on a years long contract at a decent rate who would add to the long term problem of bloated squad full of over paid "padding" if we don't see him as a starter long term, which I doubt we do. It doesn't matter how cheap the fee for him might be, what matters is what his wage commitment will be for the next four or five years. You can keep repeating "a bunch of defenders contracts are nearly up so we have to buy defenders" until you're blue in the face, we are hearing you and nobody is misunderstanding you but it misses the point on two fronts: firstly that we have more pressing concerns in the squad THIS season and secondly that squad spaces are not available THIS season. If Soyuncu isn't going and we're doomed to see him go next year for free then we can forget reinforcing at the back this year, any available space in the squad we can use to either replace someone that leaves (assuming Youri) or bring in an actual starting right winger that's a bigger priority. We might be skint, yeah, it's possible. But the current situation isn't necessarily a reflection of that it's a reflection of the state of the squad. There's a difference between the club having money and the club having ENOUGH money that it can afford to have six or so senior squad members sat in the reserves not playing and even potentially completely unregistered for the Premier League. That's Manchester United level wealth and we're obviously not there. If someone's coming in, people have to get off the wage bill because we can't afford to have players sat around collecting a salary that aren't contributing. That's not "skint" that's just running your business properly. And, to come back to Bednarek, that's why this transfer would be alarming. Because if new signings are going to be a rarity because we have too many on the books as it is, then the first guy through the door shouldn't be a centre back regardless of what the squad looks like in 23/24. We're not building for the future when the squad for the present is already unbalanced af. Now I agree with two things you said from the start - 1. let's not panic and 2. this probably isn't happening anyway. But defending the actual transfer on a theoretical level because you can't see why people think it makes poor sense? Come on. Now you're just looking for an argument (I do enough of it, I'd know.) The_77 Posted 13 July 2022 Posted 13 July 2022 He’s good in the air and not the worst player— let’s face it, we’re not going to bring in anyone ahead of Fofana and Evans this season.
J.Lisemore Posted 13 July 2022 Posted 13 July 2022 Sack the recruitment team if this goes through, seriously. 1

This is probably why Brendan went public with the profile of defender he wanted so the scouting team didn't serve up this kind of shite player. He's probably really annoyed with our scouting right now and director of football who have let him down quite a bit lately. LCFC's margin for error with recruitment is small and it seems like we're in the process of that point being painfully driven home.
