Leicester City extended the contract of Hamza Choudhury before sending him out on loan to Watford.

The 24-year-old was due to see his contract expire next summer, but City activated an option which means he is now tied down to the club until the summer of 2024. That allowed Leicester and Watford to insert an option to buy clause in the deal, meaning Watford can make the transfer permanent at the end of the 2022-23 season should they wish to do so.

So we extended the contract to put in an option to buy clause? So we’re trying to make some money come the end of the loan and banking on Hamza impressing

If they’re paying his wages for the season ( or part + loan fee) it seems a reasonable gamble . If they send him back we still need a loanee for 2023/24 but if he impresses ,without an extension ,they just get him free next year

Seems a pretty unnecessary gamble.

I think with game time and the relative lack of pressure in the Championship we’ll see at the very least a good Championship player who’ll fetch a fair bit.

But then it requires Hamza to take a pay cut which he'll be under no obligation to do. Even at £30k a week it's a lot for a Championship club to agree to over a 3+ year deal so whatever fee we manage to get may well be offset by having to once again subsidise his wages for a year. Don't forget he'll have had no say in that extension, so why would he then do the club a favour next summer and agree to a pay cut?

With all the other players due to finish their contract worse case he could be a squad filler but with a years Championship experience if they choose not to buy.

Isn’t his option to, after Watford, return here, not play, stall his career, for a year on, we assume, 60k or go to another club and further his career? If we do need to offset wages I imagine the transfer fee will offset that.

It doesn’t seem so horrific. Our other option is to let his contract expire and not take advantage of Hamza getting a name for himself again with playing time at a more forgiving level.

It seems like the option of possibly making some money or definitely making no money. There’s a risk he’ll be happy stalling his career again but I think that’s limited: his career needs sustained game time.

You've missed the risk of us being stuck with a player on 60k p/w who doesn't impress on loan.

Seen a few rumours on social media that Stolarcyk (sp?) is going to Fleetwood on loan.

Scott Brown is the manager so that doesn't surprise me. I imagine they might get a few of ours this season.

Hamza wages are 3m, if he does well and we get a fee of say 6.5m, we just pay him 3m wages upfront and make 3.5m, fee of 10m you make 7m.

A win for him, win for us.

But it does require him to have a good season.

Every in or out at a club is a risk, it's a 3m gamble.

Which says to me we aren't on our last quid as some make out.

I know weve all given up, but there has to be the smallest chance he goes out and actually really develops with game time. What if he starts to perfect the dm role, maybe the club think theres still hope he reaches his potential.

I'll hold my hands up if it pays off.

Based on what I've seen though, it's the the equivalent of me betting you £3 million that I will guess the correct result of a 6 sided dice. The odds are stacked against us on this one.

It’s never been said that we are though. People have seen no signings and just assumed.

We are close to FFP boundaries, meaning we cannot spend money until people have been moved on.

Got a feeling he'll be playing CB in their back three.

Doubt it, they've got **** all in midfield, that's why they signed him

He might look dynamite next to Nobody and Tom Cleverly instead of Youri Tielemans and KDH to be fair lol

With Smithies signing I expect we should see Stolarczyk join Fleetwood pretty soon

he expected to go straight into the side?

I would certainly hope so

Something going on with their current number 1 Alex Cairns, lost his place to the keeper they signed in the summer who was only meant to be backup to him and isn’t that good
