Silly appointing him captain really, how many games over the last two seasons?

He’s got to go.

He’s not a leader like Morgan.

I wouldn’t even say he makes our back line more aggressive/organised like Huth.

He’s barely played and can’t see him making even 15 appearances for us next season based on recent history….what is the club honestly thinking?

I’ll take all that back if he’s on a very modest CHAMPIONSHIP salary but I can’t see us being that professional as we make continued sentimental and costly contract offers in recent years.

Not the club captain we want or need, which is surprising considering his experience.

Not a fan if we do choose to renew. It's a chance to get in someone fresh and new, with something to prove. Evans is a liability, and I'm not sure how much 'leadership' he does show.

Even if he is fit and stays, you cannot play him next to Souttar and for me Harry is the first name on the team sheet (in defence) in the championship

Why?!!

He’s not the type of player you want in the battle of the Championship.

He’s injury prone - unfortunate - or is he? We’ve heard previous clubs and managers claiming they virtually had to force him to play and you have to question if that seems to be a similar scenario here.

He’s slow and always looking for the negative pass.

Not what I expect from the club captain and a supposed leader.

And ultimately I dare say it wouldn’t come cheap.

Let him go.

I hate comments like this. Its now become a fact that he does this... because Pulis has said on a podcast that he didnt take risks with injuries. Thats not a bad thing necessarily, why do we want someone playing if they wont be at the top of their game.  Not once has any manager actually questioned his integrity, he is one of the most capped NI players of all time, sir alex adored him, he's been captain at that old managers club... Its all been blown out of context.

He missed a lot of games this season. But you could see how desperate he was to play when he eventually got his chance, so lets not be so quick to judge. Im going to sit in the happy with this camp personally.

Not many clubs would have someone of his caliber to come off the bench when they get a knock.

Seems I'm in a minority where I think it wouldn't be a bad thing should he re-sign. You'd like to think we'd know his fitness levels, which would determine the type of contract he's offered.

You can see how much of a better team we are defensively when he players. He made Soyunchu look class. I'd say a season with Faes on you'd see a completely different player too.

We massively lacked experience this past season. We need to be adding, not removing.

Would be happy for him to resign if the club can have a modicum of confidence about his fitness. People on the website don't have the intricate knowledge of his injuries the decision makers will.

Ah???

He's always, without fail, looking for the negative pass, @An Away Move hit the nail on the head yesterday, he's too slow, he's slow to release the ball, allowing the opposition to reset - and if we must go down the possession based football that seems to be the remit and brief from within the club that completely nullifies any reasoning to be playing that way.

Not to mention the physicality in the Championship that alot of our players (and I put him quite high on the list) haven't got the stomach for.

Hopefully a Premier League club will come in for Evans and off him more dosh than we can. He’s brilliant when consistently fit, but he doesn’t play enough to justify the annual wage we’ll have to offer him IMO.

if the contract is a low one, and we could look to get him in a coaching role in the future, his experience with younger players would be an advantage

Yeah that's true because the way our academy is being run most of our lads will end up being taxi drivers.

Will not be able to handle a championship season at all.

If its a poor contract offer with appearance bonuses then fair enough but this isn't exactly encouraging news.

And you think the powers that be have that level of detail? You're giving them far too much credit. If each department had proper autonomy and you had a DOF with their finger of the pulse, your comment would be totally fair. But neither of those things are the case so why would ownership suddenly take an interest in such a specific when they couldn't be bothered to do that when Brendan was failing?

And yes, we don't know the medical assessments but we do have enough knowledge from our own experience. He's always picked up injuries throughout his career, he's missed big chunks of games throughout the past 2 years, every game he's wincing after a small challenge. Add on the fact he's on a huge salary, has spoken as though he's gone/shown no sentiment in his statement and he's 35, means that keeping him would signal yet more idiotic planning from the management of the club.

Sorry, as not meaning to sound like I'm having a go at you, just think it's another hopelessly out of touch decision from the club.

In each of his last 4 seasons his passing has progressed us up the pitch more than any other outfield player per 90

In 3 of those 4 seasons, he did that whilst also attempting less passes per 90 compared to his defensive partner - Soyuncu and Fofana

Not entirely sure I would say he is always looking for the negative pass

I like my defenders to be able to defend first and foremost. Passing abilities are then secondary. Although we played our best football under Rodgers whilst he was at the back, so he can't be that bad with the ball?

Precisely, I can't agree more.

Which is where lies the problem the he's looking for the negative pass, causing problems putting ourselves under pressure.

We want a squad that is committed, focussed, driven and able to remain fit for more than 15 minutes during a match.

Evans needs showing the door.

Looks like I'm one of the very few that don't hate this. If he can stay fit for 30 games he will be the best centre half in the league. Obviously that's a big if, but if it's a relatively low wage and has a hefty chunk of it on appearance fees then it's a decent deal all round.

It showed the last few games he played his leadership and organisation was missing compared to them headcases Faes/Soyuncu/Amartey.

Play him in the middle of a back 3 at that level he will be able to coast through most games.

I also like the fact he seems to have some self awareness in that he knows he didn't do enough to keep us up and doesn't want his legacy tarnished by last season so get us back up as a minimum, get Northern Ireland to the Euros and hang his boots up for a job well done.

We're definitely going to need a few old heads to hang around as the turnover of players and the likely profile of players are going to need coaching through games and Evans is a very good organiser. Players seem to like him as well so as long as the deal is right struggling to see the negatives.
