Blame who, what or 'nothing, the climate can just be like this'?..

Everyone with any kind of power to affect change.

Because should the worst happen, those who are left with a vastly more shitty world will blame each and every one of us, and I wouldn't blame them for doing so.

Absolutely sick of hearing about 1976 from boomers

Many seem to think it’s a badge of honour that means they can scoff at what we are seeing now. It was clearly a fluke at the time where it didn’t even reach temperatures as high as we see now as well as now being more and more regular and earlier/for longer.

It's fear. It's people so afraid of change that might affect their lives that they cannot deal it, and so engage in denial.

Unfortunately, the laws of thermodynamics and their consequences cannot be bluffed, or ignored, for very long. Some folks clearly cannot grasp that.

Also makes me laugh how people think the answer is to open their windows. No understanding of basic heat transfer and thermodynamics at all!

Frustrating tonight though. Looks like it will be at least 10pm before opening windows will achieve anything. Normally it’s possible a bit earlier.

I've mentioned this before, but this drives me insane with my in-laws, they cannot comprehend that opening the windows when it's warmer outside lets the warm air in. How hard is it to understand, really lol

I just reached 30.5c indoors so I’ve given in and opened all the windows as it’s about on parity.

It wasn't cooler outside than inside at midnight here. I opened a few small ones in the hope of it being a bit cooler overnight. Woke at 5.30am and opened everything up as it's 21c v 24c.

We're very fortunate that the bedroom and lounge are NE facing and aren't as warm as the rest of the house.

Did it work?

With the fan on max and all windows open overnight, I’m actually managing to be sleeping comfortably with my 10.5 tog duvet.

For the first 20 odd years of my life, I lived in one of the councils concrete houses - the type you see all over the city.

Although cavity walled, there was no insulation in those days and the concrete acted like a storage heater - absorbing heat all day and giving it off all night.

It was very, very uncomfortable.

I guess for that reason, I've been fine overnight during this and previous heatwaves. A bedroom at 26 degrees all night is nothing compared to the heat and humidity of my childhood home.

Every time we have a heatwave I look at Stornoway at about 18c and say to my wife I wish we had a place up there.

Hah my sister moved to a place on Loch Fyne recently, and is no doubt feeling more smug than she is anyway right now!

What do the Europeans do Debs in Summer to keep cool?

I presume ac is normal in most houses?

Where do you live, Stornoway?

On the plus side I appear to have sweated out any alcohol consumed during the England game and have woken up hangoverless lol

Just looking about seems like most portable air con units are sold out! get one when they back in stock they are a game changer

We get the early morning sun at the back of the house where our lounge and 2 bedrooms are. By 1pm the sun is baking the main side wall and the evening sun is on the front of the house and the other bedroom. Putting a hand on the bricks in the afternoon and it is like a bloody kiln.

Is anyone who's had air conditioning put in able to say how much it cools areas beyond the room the unit is in? I think it's inevitable I'll have it in the next couple of years but I'm wondering if it's worth starting with one on the landing (fairly standard pre war semi - that's a house by the way, not a military fetish). Would that make a difference to the whole top floor or do you really need one in each room?

Not had it installed personally, but I’m almost certain you’ll get better results targeting rooms. If you’re finding it uncomfortable to sleep, then I’d start with a unit in a bedroom(s). I wouldn’t bother with a unit on a landing, myself.

Also wondering this. Surely like in a large hotel room one unit does multiple areas as long as the doors/windows are closed?
