I work in science. A lot big part of the measure of success in this field is how many papers you publish in well known journals.  If for a few years I published 20 papers in these high impact journals I would be known as a successful influential scientist. If I then went the next 25-30 years without publishing anything people would no longer think of me as being influential. Yes I would have had success in the past no one is denying that however it dosent keep me as a big name forever

I'm no expert in the field but I would say, to pluck a couple of names out the air, Archimedes and Isaac Newton are probably fairly secure in their status as big name influential scientists despite not getting up to a great deal recently. The whole point of trophies is that they exist as a permanent record of your success that nobody can take away.

False equivalence.

Spurs are undoubtedly a better side than us at present. As shown earlier in the season, and at the backend of last season, they have the potential to play us off the pitch.

However, for the first time in well over a year there is a bit of a buzz and excitement amongst the fans. The balance in the team and the attacking threat we carried at Villa was much better. The new defensive additions saw an improvement performance at the back against a good, in-form side. A couple of bigger names returning from injury. We got our first league win of 2023. And we have a Brazilian. We have to ride that wave of excitement and really take the game to Spurs. Unchanged 11, same again.

Hoping they don't pour cold water on the excitement and flatten us. Fancy a bit of a ding-dong 2-2 here.

Nah I’m not having this Spurs love-in in this thread. I hate them. Winning a handful of things before most of us were born doesn’t make them anything special. Are you all happy to admit that Nottingham forest are better than us because they won a European cup centuries ago?

7-4 to us with 6 of those goals coming in the last 5 minutes. Tête hat trick, Danny Ward with 2 own goals, Harry Kane crying.

But why do you hate them, say more than the average team?

Not a love in for Spurs. Just we are not all rabid about other clubs . I really want us to win though. What Forest did under Clough was amazing. Just enjoy our own wins

I don’t particular hate them way more than the average team, but I would say I actively dislike them, rather than feeling neutral like I do most of our opponents.

As for why, I think it’s pretty much exclusively down to the title winning season. Their fans (and even players) perfectly summarised the arrogance of each and every one of the “top 6”. It was as if the title was rightfully theirs because of the name they had, and little old Leicester had no right beating them to it. Their attitude towards us was disgusting and I absolutely loved it when they whimpered away finishing 3rd.

It would be such a big win tomorrow without meaning to state the obvious. The general morale has been lifted with the result at Villa and the new signings, so naturally the mindset has turned to thinking we might do something against Spurs.

I didn’t experience that at all. Bar a silly interview with a mockney on Sky Sports, where he couldn’t do the maths! We won the league, they didn’t. That’s all that matters. Nonetheless, it’s all about experience so I can’t really dispute yours.

if you don’t like the model, create your own.
What would your criteria be? For me, winning the top league trumps winning the FA Cup and a lesser European cup. I’m not saying they don’t matter, but if you creating an objective hierarchy, a cup win is less significant.

obviously you could create an hierarchy based on a different criteria. Fan base and turnover for example.

Nope...!

One criteria on the pitch achievements.thats the only show of football success..Title/Cups/Europe/consistent under top 8..others back-up  play for the tradition - romance of the game, because without these teams, there is not the success of above criteria..

&&& Your cranky & weird plus under 40 if you can't understand all those base lines...

All sports need the rough & tumble of the "Also rans" without them no sport,no occasional giant killers,no banana skins...Even with our last ten years,we are not much more than those nobodies who suddenly became a somebody with fanfair trumpets & the big bass drum..

Why..!!

.because the world joined in the fun..We allowed the world to dream our dream but not even we could believe our own story, because FT just couldn't grasp it...Our own platform were the first n worst willing to fire off the Buts, the ifs and scaremonger over the future,by believing we had become experts but not qualified..

One shot of one of our Mr Leicesters summed up our story, was Gary at home with kids trying to hold back his tears,

That spoke what every loyal first generation of success of the then Yeovil/hardened LCFC fan at the time..

Wrong, wrong, wrong!!. Man you really don't get it,I fart on the Norms...

This is football, tradition ,romance and dreams roll on, until the next time, whenever that is...it creates the story of those aspirations, that are not of your dimension...

Spot on. The reason the FA Cup win was so sweet was our back story of the other 4 finals lost and the monkey off our backs.

I had no issues with spuds until our title winning season when most London based pundits were hell bent on that season being spuds to lose despite leicester being on top for the majority of the season. Sure they were the only ones that had a chance to catch up but that’s what a title race is.

the difference is spuds were expected to win as they were more fancied, had never won it for so long despite trying every season and had the big name players.

nobody gave us a chance in hell but boy did we win the whole world over. There is still bitterness we won the title in Tottenham and because of that I will never like them. Give credit where credit is due!

probably why they always turn up to play against us lol. Well I hope we give them an unexpected spanking tomorrow. We are at home let’s make it a fortress. :chant::scarf:

Isn't the Spurs hate purely based on how some of their fans acted like the title was already won in 2016, and then they subsequently didn't win? So they direct their anger towards us instead of inwards, and then out of that anger bore a faux rivalry?

They got above their station, we held the higher ground, and we rubbed that in their faces ever since.

I generally agree that being the main reason but have been told stories several times from different people it also stems back to the League Cup final where their fans kicked off? :dunno:

Obviously there's two sides to every story, all fanbases have their idiots and it was 24 years ago.

I’m finding it difficult to follow your thoughts, but If your arguing that titles/cups/league positions are the only objective test of a club’s stature/success, then I agree. I appreciate the ‘back up’ stuff is the essence of all sport, but it’s subjective and unquantifiable.

In terms of achievement, do you believe our PL win is comparable to our league cup win?

Rodgers press conference this week

Supporters?

“Two of the three games are at home. The supporters are everything in terms of galvanising the team. You have to inspire the supporters, but last weekend we went behind and the supporters were still there. We want that to be the same at home. We want that intensity and passion. Having that connection is important.”

Make-up of midfield?

“In balance, it’s always about balance. All players have to be competitive. You need one controlling the game from behind. You need a running player who can break the lines with and without the ball. Then you need one who can create and score. All three have to run. I always like to have more midfield players. That’s where the game begins. It sets you up. We have choices in there.”

Ndidi?

“Ndidi is back in training and hopefully should be fine for the weekend.”

Ricardo?

“He’s looked great, he’ll come into the squad. He played 70 minutes. Him and Ryan Bertrand played. Those two have been out for a long time, they got through the game. He’ll now come into the squad. That’s fantastic news for us.”

Soumare and Evans?

“Bouba looked very good, he probably won’t be ready for the weekend. It will be Manchester United for him. He’s come back quickly. He needs to build back fitness. Jonny, he’s worked well, he’s had a couple of niggles, so we’ll assess him.”

Oversee rebuild?

“Hopefully, that would be great, getting the chance to do that. We’ve lost important players, but it just feels that progression to come. There are players who are very good. Naturally with players out of contract over this next 18 months. There will be changes. I’d love to see that through. If you bring in new players with new hunger, that will improve the ones you have. Hopefully I’ve shown we can have success.”

What learned from playing Spurs?

“You need to make sure the resting defence is in the right positions. We gave away too much from set-pieces. Against a team like Tottenham who are very good when they break out, you have to make sure the team is set up well and slow down the counters. You want to go after the game, but you have to be really careful against Tottenham in that aspect. We scored goals and created more chances. If we can close the game, we have a great chance.”

Iheanacho?

“You saw last week that when you have the profiles you want, the effect on his talents. He scored a goal and set up two. The one for Tete was perfectly-weighted. He will drop in, but you need players to go beyond him. He’s been excellent in training as well.”

Think about balance in midfield?

Spurs?

“We’ve played them before and won before. We understand their strengths. They’re very good on the counter. They have good speed and can make the final pass. Against teams like Spurs, you have to concentrate. We were well in the game for 70 minutes at their place. Then we showed naivety. We showed we can score goals. With a home crowd behind us...”

Kane?

“He has absolutely everything. He’s a world-class player. It’s not just the consistency. He’s been relentless. It’s not by accident. It’s hard work on the training field. He’s got every tool that you would want as a top striker. He scores goals, he links the game, he’s tough, he’s mentally strong. He’s a brilliant player, a great leader.”

Tete?

“You can tell he watches football and has a great knowledge of the game. It’s our job to support any player who comes in, whatever language they speak. He understands the position really well. His appetite to work and run, it made for a great debut. The longer he has with us, that will improve.”

Soyuncu and Turkey earthquake?

“Yeah, it’s been awful for him. Speaking to him this week and looking at some of the images he’s shown me, it’s devastating. He’s had no close family there thankfully. But he understands the grief of back home. He’s coping the best we could hope for. He knows he has our support. From a personal level, he’s trying to do everything he can.”

New Super League?

“To be fair, I’ve been training so I’ve not seen any of that news. The message that will be given will be similar to the last one. European football cannot intrude on domestic football. It was about the merits of the qualification. That would be key in any reform. It’s something I’ve not looked too much into.”

Surprised it's come back?

“Not really. It was clear in this country what the supporters thought of it. But I don’t think it will go away. There is reform in 2024 of the Champions League and various other forms of the game. I don’t expect it to go away. We have to keep a close eye on it. Domestic football, supporters don’t deserve that to be intruded on.”

My opinion on this has changed slightly with the news Conte is back. I think the lazy Spurs pampered lot are intimidated by him rather than inspired. Since having a break due to his operation, Spurs have raised their game. Here's hoping for a spectacular return to form.

My Spurs mate said to me after we were closing in on title. It was supposed to be about us (Spurs) but the Leicester story trumped theirs and we obviously deserved the win
