Yup, people can't separate personality from performance and be objective

In a low block, he's a PL capable defender. He's shown that for us (Man City, Rennes stick out) on the rare occasions we played a low block. Same with Souttar at Newcastle.

He was clearly a step above most championship defenders even with a high line, the very thing that would expose his flaws. As you say, a good partner and/or system covers that. Footballing wise, in terms of passing and game intelligence, he's wayyyyy above average even at PL level

And yeah, agree there might be debate over his attitude. In some ways though, I kinda like that he calls poor managers out and gets the arseys about not playing.

Would I have handed him three years though?! Not a chance,! Not his fault though that Rudkin did.

Best take so far. He's not a bad player, he's just not good enough in the areas we need. And unfortunately, his weaknesses (namely pace and aerial ability) far outweigh his strengths for us at PL level.

It's his seeming attitude which is a main issue, for me. But I am on the fence about that—as others have said, I have no problem a player calling out a manager and demanding higher standards, if it's appropriate.

The irrational hate for vesterguard on here is rediculous he's a good player and probably the best CB at the club. He has his flaws but played with a partner that compliments him he is more than capable

Not sure about irrational but I think that the dog thing has been overdone, it wasn't even this season. It's one of those stories that gets leaked when there's disharmony in the club and unhappy players. Would never have come out in the Championship season when he was getting called Vester-goat and we're 12 pts clear in the league. No-one was calling out his attitude back then either.

As for the rest, he's symbolic of how and why this club has spiralled in just 5 years. A 3yr deal for a player of his limited pace and value when we have have half a dozen other CBs here was ridiculous. When you're as skint as we are you dont waste your wage bill on ageing CBs. You offer that to the likes of Nelson who will be the future of the club.

He is a bad player. What is he good at besides passing? And he's a defender so I'm not even bothered about that. Lacking pace is okay, some of the greatest defenders of all time lacked pace, if you can make up for it in reading the game but he can't. First goal we conceded at Fulham away comes to mind. He gets caught out all the time.

Was about 3 years ago wasn’t it, he had a decent game.

His passing and distribution is actually probably top half PL level - It’s just every other aspect of his game is, as you say, lower Championship at best.

Harry Winks is similar - His weaknesses aren’t as pronounced as Vestergaard, but they’re not far off.

I think it comes down to, most young CBs now are brought through being good with the ball, Vestergaard’s strength.

Could we find a centre back who is younger, equally good on the ball whilst being more athletic and basically much stronger all around and on less wages. Hell yes we could if we could be bothered to look. Same as Winks.

We are paying these guys so much more than what they are worth.

Sorry I meant the best one that was at the club this season I agree souttar and Nelson are probably better or at least have a higher ceiling.

However I disagree with this narrative that he is a terrible player we look better when he plays compared to when he dosen't

I would say the last part of representative of what else we have! Hmm Faes…..

I think he’s a poor player. Not terrible. But as I say, while he might look tidy on the ball, 14 bookings at Championship level still shows a player who was absolutely not in control.

I thought that Championship season we were quite suspect defensively generally to be honest so I have never bought into the narrative (not that you are saying this), that Vestergaard and Faes were great. For players of their standing, we should have had a much better defensive record in my view.

I don’t think it’s unfair to highlight that Jannik has fallen out with all bosses minus Enzo.

Call it old fashioned but I’d rather have a CB who can defend first and make some nice passes second, not the other way round.

If we’re playing a low block, a defender who wins more aerial duels than not is also Jannik’s strength which is baffling considering of his height.

Might have been his first league start for us in 21/22.. We lost 1-0 but he looked decent, played an hour..

I don't think it's enough to pin the argument of him being decent in a low block on though!!

He is shit. While he made some good passes out of the back, you knew if he didn’t pass straight away he would hold onto the ball for too long, so that stupid fake pass, scoop it back to slow it down even more.  That didn’t help in an already negative Cooper set up.

He was shit Everton as well, while Sounare didn’t help by being himself, his positing was always wrong.

Along with VK, we seem to have the only Danes that are light weight despite their size.  Players should be bouncing off of them but they get bullied constantly.

Is his passing actually that good?
He telegraphs his short lazy passes between the defensive triangle unit of CB, FB and DM/CM which offers a switched on pressing team opportunities and what does he actually achieve with his long passes from the halfway line, do they actually find a target more often than not?
He is not pulling assists like other defensive passers, Dan Burn has more assists, Ipswich’s Burgess got their pass of the season, let alone trying to go up against someone like VVD.

Another one waiting for the club to speak to them lol  wonder how many more conversations there are to be had which will be crucial to our prep for next season

No point talking to players when they haven't even decided who they want as manager first.

In totally completely unrelated other news Filbert Fox will be a foot taller next season.

Maybe not, to complete a lap of the pitch in the 15 minute half time might be beyond him.

Fair enough, must be like trying to park a truck in a busy tesco.
