Some of the clubs are very big historically, and very well supported. You'd think a lot of 'games gone' English fans would like that, but as usual it's just a big pose.

That and the fact that you have a much better chance of getting to the final, which I'd still rather do in the UECL than get knocked out in the UCL first stage. As a couple of others have said, in a way I'd rather Forest get top 5 and then get dumped out of the UCL than progress further in a lesser competition.

Narh man, you get too much money just for playing that group stage even if they lose every game.

Have them get in the Conference League, draw some "little" clubs that their fans think they'll walk over and get humbled by Vitoria, Cercle and FCK.

Since when did this Forest/Cov mutual bum licking become a thing?

Maybe Forest and Derby have fallen out.

I hate how recent success is somehow less legitimate or devalued through the general nostalgia bias in football. Had we won the league in 1976 and the cup in 1981, we'd be seen as a 'proper club'. Instead we're ephemeral upstarts.

True. But you'd expect in 30 years time our success will be nostalgic. I notice videos on social media are starting to come back about Blackburn now.

Back to that 75-89 era, it's funny how Ipswich are always rubbed out of that period. FA Cup in 78 (I think) and a UEFA cup in 81 ....almost entirely forgotten.

This “proper club” thing seems to correlate with how long a team has been outside of the Premier League. Guarantee if we spend a decade or 2 out of it, the consensus will be that we are a proper club who they’d like to see back in the league, even before 2015 there was a lot of PL fans saying this about us, a lot of it is a novelty thing.

Everyone was rooting for Brentford and Bournemouth before they got promoted, now they are (wrongly) seen as what’s wrong with the league.

Signs for Cov. 93rd minute. Wembley. Vardy's through, one-on-one with Stolarczyk.

Suddenly he feigns a shot, smiles and winks before turning around and begins running back towards his own goal. The rest of his team look on speechless. The crowd go silent. He hits it, a top bins 25 yarder into his own net.

He runs over to the Cov fans, removes his shirt and drops his kecks revealing "LC" emblazoned on one arse cheek, "FC" on the other. He gestures to their support to kiss it.

Suddenly a beam of light emerges from the heavens to take him. He's been chosen to ascend. The god of shithousery.

More realistic scenario IMO.

Brilliant!

Slight tweek... The beam of light comes from between his cheeks, blinding the Cov fans, so that the GOAT's goal is the last thing they ever see.

He runs over to the Cov fans, pulls the pockets out of his specially made shorts, unzips the fly and does his best elephant impression.

I’ve added a mild alteration to his celebration.

Exactly this.

If they qualify for the UCL and lose 4-0 to Real before getting dumped out at the league stage, they'll be laughing all the way to the bank and there's a risk that the fluke will act as a launchpad.

Let them get humbled by drawing in Armenia and getting thumped by Dinamo Tbilisi while earning €3.68 as they do it.

It's crazy how such clubs are quick to remind us that football wasn't invented in 1992 but refuse to recognise any achievements after it.

I think it's because as the game becomes ever more commercialized and detached from the clubs' communities, and as many of the the towns themselves become somewhat soulless and chain-filled, fans cling even harder to an idealized, nostalgia-tinged version of English football. So a club from a traditionally working class town in the West Midlands for example is a 'proper club' despite dwindling attendances in an out of town bowl sponsored by a betting company, and despite the town itself retaining a lot less original character than 'tinpot' places like Brighton and Fulham.
