Manual chokes on cars.

Had nightmares  about my Talbot Samba stalling at lights without the choke fully on🤣

Rusty sills patched up with newspaper and soon filler.

My brother had an old banger and he had a piece of string through a in the dash connected to the accelrater lever which he used to pull to accelerate. There were some complete wrecks on the road back then.

It's clearly the adults in this poor kids life failing him right now....

Wrong, at least for the majority of the adults  in his life - I can’t speak for the ones on his dads side as I don’t know them and aren’t with them when they have the lad.

And by the way, he’s happy, talkative, confident and doing well at school. He’s just not into anything that doesn’t involve a screen.

Meat safes:

Meat was kept in one of these in a pantry or larder on a "Cold Shelf" made from granite.

It stopped flies getting to the meat and kept it cool. My Nan had one in her cottage in Wilbarston, which was rural and without very many amenities back then. (I'm talking late 50's early 60's)

I'd wager that my Dad still has one of these on one of his bikes, which look like they've come out of the ark, too. Mind you, I'd wager that a lot of the contents of Dad's workshop could feature on this thread!

You're certainly right there - mine too.

The pushbike dynamo that @davieG posted, reminded me of a simple circuit I put together in my early teens that enabled my lights to switch automatically to batteries whenever I stopped, thereby keeping the lamps lit.

The circus coming to town with a big street procession including elephants trampling through the streets. This was in LBoro so it may not have taken place in your neck of the woods. Nevertheless it's died away (possibly rightly), no doubt on account of animal rights concerns.

Can’t remember the last time I saw a rag and bone man and horse

That's because they're Eastern Europeans now that drive battered Ford Transit pick-ups with raised sides to stop the washing machines and old bikes falling off.

They can't sell rags or bones these days.
