Those popular in the 1980s name strips at the top of car windscreens denoting the driver and partner's names.

It was all very well having "Jason" and "Tracey" on there, until Jason was giving a lift to his mate Darren.

That's more societal than the smoking ban, come on now.

Smoking is at such a low level, especially with younger people. If pubs, bars and clubs were still smokey clouds I guarantee people would be voting with their feet and keeping them empty. Pretty sure smokers couldn't alone keep those places going.

The rise of drinking at home, cost of drinking and socialising not taking place in those places are also contributing factors.

Keeping pubs alive was not a reason to keep exposing innocent people to second hand smoke.

Agree with this, also 18-25yr olds these days aren't as bothred about boozing unlike 10-20+ years ago, many are tee total or reducing their intake, this will contriute to the pub culture too.

Lodgers.

Just reading about a homeless guy - holding down a a full time job - on the BBC website. He can't afford rent. The old days those in the same situation -  a Curly or Eddie Yates - would lodge with an Emily Bishop or Hilda

(As for the name checks above, iykyk)

When I started work I was living in "Digs" with a single parent family and then with a Polish family with my brother until we could afford to rent a flat on our own.

Pubs were going down the pan way before covid

and you think that's because people are not allowed to smoke in pubs?

I mean, there's always people out there smoking outside pubs and restaurants..

Besides, other indoor social activities have grown since the smoking ban came into place, so  if it was down to the smoking ban, wouldn't these have gone downhill too?

I’m not saying it isn’t all I meant was lots of people like to smoke when they drink and when the weathers rubbish it definitely puts some people off going to the pub. I agree with the ban but recognise it must have had an impact on the industry.

It did of course, but mostly it led to the changes in behaviors which it was hoping to.  Most smokers despite the noise still went to the pub, and popped outside when they wanted a smoke.  I would bet you hard cash though that the fact that young adults are in a smoke free environment socialising massively reduced the numbers taking up smoking.
