Amusingly all the comments on BBC say they don't want him. Tuchel is an elite manager.

No doubt xenophobic gammons who still think it's 1945. The same would be nursing a semi if the FA had appointed an English manager with the same record.

Tuchel is genuinely one of the best managers in the game. I'd argue he'll probably be the best tactical brain in international football unless someone appoints Pep.

A proper manager. A winner, but also one that won't be a yes man for the FA. Good appointment, but good luck to the soft FA in dealing with him. It might be good to rattle a few cages there.

Southgate definitely took England further than we had been but I just don't really see international football as something where you build on previous outcomes. It isn't club football where you're playing every week and training every day. It's a very finite amount of time and games. I don't think what Tuchel does here will have really been shaped by Southgate at all. There aren't really foundations other than raised expectation - something that I think given the calibre of some of our players was going to be there anyway.

I do think there's a chance Tuchel completely tanks at England but a lot of what Southgate was championed for I saw scant evidence of in the last tournament - didn't look a happy camp to me or a cohesive team. We fell into that final. Complete fluke and luck of the draw. To be honest I'd argue Southgate achieved a much higher level of performance in 2022 despite only hitting a quarter final.

We looked genuinely decent in 2022 for large parts. Absolutely obliterated exactly the kinds of teams we went on to struggle against in Germany this summer and were actually quite unlucky not to at least take France to extra-time.

The big difference I think Tuchel could make is that he'll be brave from the get go and make the right calls in game management in the business end of tournaments. His winning mentality and record are top notch.

might turn out to be the only Bayern coach in the last 15 years not to win the league …..

Although he did win the league with Bayern...

There are also a few dilemmas in this England side. There are good players but a lot of them in the same position. He'll not be scared to make tough decisions on dropping players where necessary.

I am pleasantly surprised by this from the FA. I didn't think they'd actually go for him.

Genuinely thought the FA would come in for Steve Cooper during the international break and we would have swooped in for Tuchel.  Looks like that ship has sailed now.

I think I'd rather have Tuchel than Potter, Howe or Dyche.

It's yet another damning indictment of our league system where clubs would rather buy German than risk English.

Managed the last 8 games of the season and won 5 of them - relied on dortmund drawing their last game to get across the line.  Technically you’re right - morally you’re not 😄

Worth it just to hear the likes of my dad saying 'bloody German in charge, disgraceful' lol

Interesting dynamic with Tuchel, 18 months is hardly over commitive. Gets one go at the world cup.

Not 100% convinced but he's capable and has a tactical brain.

I don't agree that it's xenophobic to be disappointed that an Englishman can't be found to get the best out of the England team.

Would help if they existed.

I’m not for or against this. Never really rated him but there’s a big portion of people, pundits etc that do rate him.

Hopefully he can take us to the next level.

Not in and of itself, no. The fact no English manager is good enough shows that the FA has much work to do in terms of training coaches.

Writing him off before he's even picked a squad because he's German though is peak gammon.
