Totally agree! Anyone saying he did “ok” isn’t judging him on the basis of today’s game alone, they’re are holding on to previous grudges/judgments.

Which are also were also way worse off….  People often fail to from their own judgments…. Just follow the general opinion…. It’s tedious in the extreme

Not our finest hour but 3 points in the bag.

Standout observation for me is that play grinds to a halt as soon as Okoli, Skipp, Soumare or to a lesser extent JJ get involved.  Vesty and Faes at least both look to get the ball forward.

Bringing on Winks allowed Marti to keep the shape and plan the same but with a bit of extra snap.  Skipp is meant to provide that but I have never seen it.

Flashes of quality from Abdul and BEK but their fullback had the measure of Mavadidi today.  Monga showed that he has the ability and confidence to humiliate defenders at this level.  Once he gets his first goal and assist I predict the floodgates will open.

Ayew was MOTM for me, especially in the second half when everything was going through him and it was great to see him really fighting for the ball.

Big shoutout to the Wednesday fans.  They turned out in numbers even with the shítshow that is going on there and executed the fan protest almost perfectly.  I hope they could hear the support they were getting from our supporters.

Agree about Ayew but Winks coming on moved the ball about at an increased tempo. He took hold of and controlled the midfield and changed the game for us.

Today’s result is perhaps the worst possible scenario, here’s why:

we may now have vestergard and faes for the rest of the season

ayew was actually alright, but it could mean we don’t look for a nailed on striker to start.
BEK with 2 assists, if he wasn’t gone already, he is now.
no alves involved

we made hard work if a team that couple potentially be the worst team we will face this year

winks on bench, clearly needed to play but this could force him out meaning we are stuck with the 2 starting CMs today and they were truly hopeless. they did not do themselves any favours. They are here forever.

all in all a win is a win but this could signify a lot more and I don’t like it.

Really glad we win though

Remarkably few comments on Bilal considering he got both assists?

If by some miracle we can keep him around it’s the difference between promotion and not imo. He only got 3 assists in the league all last season, will end up with KDH’s stats or better if he stays this season.

3 points first game of the season is never worse case scenario. Momentum can quickly build from a couple of wins to lay a solid foundation for the season ahead.

Vestergaard, Faes, Ayew are all more than good enough at this level.

The BEK and Alves points cancel each other out really, if BEK goes, Alves comes into the squad.

I don’t think anyone watching today who didn’t already have BEK on their watch list suddenly added him to the list today.

if he goes, he’ll be someone’s last minute panic buy.

The squad that were involved today will develop as the season goes on, Winks will now come in and start ahead of Skipp I’m sure.

Really impressed second half, although, admittedly Wednesday were knackered.

Love the rotations to create space for others. Also, the willingness to get the ball wide for 1 v 1 works.

Mavididi, Monga, Fatawu and McAteer will benefit greatly from this system creating 1 v 1s.

Just glad we won. Always expected it to be a hard game. The team played for the fans in the first half. 2nd half you could tell they lacked pre-season games, and depths. They will probably continue to play like that every game untill players leave(which they probably will lose alot more) or somone come in and buys em. Think we played poor 1st half, did feel like it was the same s*** different league many times( but had to remind myself a few times there players are playing for the fans and trying to give the fans some hope). 2nd half think we did alot better. More fight, lacked front a man who scores goals for fun And maybe creativity. I still worry for the club and really hope we get striker before next league game.

I find the deafening wailing at Vestergaard's inclusion in the lineup hilarious, given that he clearly bosses this level and was probably our best player two seasons ago.

I've seen the sending off again he's lucky it wasn't a straight red

It was clearly a yellow card for Baz from slow motion footage, as his studs were up, but in real time it looked like a 50/50 challenge... Unfortunately Baz had already had a yellow for descent following Leicester's first goal, which you don't even need slow motion to determine as being clearly offside... The Leicester player running back into play from a clear 4-5 yards offside position - it doesn't matter if he touched the ball or not and how the linesman missed that is typical EFL.

Come to the conclusion i watch a different game to almost everyone else. :dunno:

I enjoyed it, lots of action, fast movement, players taking on/running at opposition, defenders tackling, and 25+ shots and we win.

Enjoyed that more than just about any Enzo boring masterpiece.

I'm sorry but you just don't go off your feet into a sliding 50/50 challenge with your boot extended out towards another player 2 minutes after you are yellow carded for dissent.

Even in real time he looked like an idiot. It was not smart play.

One of the least debatable sendings off I've seen in years, the fact he stood around debating it and then went back to try and give Winks lip as if Winks had got him sent off was bemusing.

It’s his vulnerability to transitional attacks. Which after yesterday I’m severely concerned about. We look very open to opponents attack in transition. Any amount of pace will undo him. On the ball he’s comfortable, off it with Soumare ahead of him he’s a major liability.

The problem with Jannik is his defending.

I don’t know if it’s a tactics thing or he goes rogue because of his obvious limitations but he always drops back so doesn’t defend as a pair with his CB partner.

We will concede a lot of goals, just like we did the last Championship season due to his lack of pace and mobility.

Agree 100%.  What I meant was it was like for like in terms of the overall shape but his ball winning was much better and he moved it on more quickly.

I thought Monga's cameo was 1 of 2 or 3 big plus' from yesterday - the other's being Fatawu, Ayew and hopefully Marti gets the message that Winks must start and Soumare shouldn't play again.

Bilal assisted both goals but looked off it to me - kept passing to where he thought players were not where they were or where they were moving to

It was a shaky start. We made it a lot harder than it needed to be but job done in the end.

I really hope Okoli and Skipp are better than what they showed yesterday. Dreadful

Like a previous poster did I watch the same game as everyone else…..poor first half for sure, but could and probably should have won 6-1….tactically we ran them into the ground…..and Vestergaard was arguably our best player on the day….Okoli the only slight disappointment, team for Huddersfield will allow some experimentation thought the Manager made sense in the post match interview…..

3 points is all that matters and that’s what we got. Contrary to popular belief, I never thought that’d be easy because I thought their players might be pumped up due to the issues surrounding the club.

That said that first half was ****ing awful. I never understood the Skipp signing but I’ve always wanted him to show something. Yesterday was a big opportunity, first game of the season at home against a lower championship side and he was the worst player on the pitch. I just do not know what we can do with him. I’d maybe start him on Tuesday to see if we can get some sort of confidence in him because he looks lost.

Really liked Ayews performance but as others has said it was more like a 10 and we still need that focal striker.

Mav struggled and was outclassed by Monga when he was replaced. Again, despite playing over an hour, I might start Mavididi tomorrow and save Monga for Preston.

If we have another season of Vestergaard and Faes so be it, their attributes are better suited to this level. Hopefully Ricardo can come back soon to add a bit of class to the team but I think we’ll be alright.

We’ve raised £30m in the last week in players sales, I’d just love us to now go out and spend 1/3 of that on a proper striker. Do that and we’re golden
