And it it was done but not announced, we'd at least be seeing a few media stories and movement in the betting markets. I'll be very, very surprised if it's Russell. We need somebody who will do something different with this group of players and there's no indication that Russell would be any different from Marti. Edited 3 February by ClaphamFox 3 1
BrilliantFox Posted 3 February Posted 3 February Whoever it is, they need to play Mukasa over Ayew and Daka. Meaning, they should utilise a False 9 system. If we carry on with the Ayew target-man bollocks, it doesn't matter who the manager is, we won't succeed. 1
AjcW Posted 3 February Posted 3 February I'm torn between whether Martin's ego would want to take on Southampton twice in a week or whether we'll appoint him after both games....

He's a free agent so no negotiations with another club to worry about. Why would we delay it? My hunch is that the board would like to have a longer look at King in the managerial role. He certainly has strong qualities to be a decent manager; and I have no doubt that he’s also gained glowing reports from respected football people from his work as a coach and interim manager to date. So why wouldn’t you give yourself some time to properly evaluate someone under your own nose - you know, give him a meaningful shot. I know many on here doubt whether he has the ability or mentality needed for the job given our current state… but I’d like to see at least one more game under his leadership to get more of a view; especially now the club has now given him a few more properly viable options to select from. 2

You may be right. I was impressed with his media interviews before and after the Charlton game—he had more steel about him than I expected. And the way the team responded early in the second half on Saturday suggested he must have given them a rocket at half time, which is something that Marti never seemed to do. It may seem counterintuitive given the result, but after Saturday's game I felt slightly more relaxed about King doing it for a bit longer. I'd certainly prefer that to Russell getting the job. 4

I get what you’re saying but the team had a similar reaction v Sheff United at home. They had a similar second half reaction v Sheff Weds at home. They’ve had similar improved performances after a first half disaster elsewhere (and they’ve also had disastrous second half performances). The problem this team has is consistency combined with adaptation to scenarios. My heart would love Kingy to be good at it - we’d have a manager for life. Someone who genuinely wants the job as The job. However, if we’d been crap and mid table - it’s one you see how it goes. With the potential points deduction, this could spiral very quickly and that is unfair on him. That’s where experience might be needed, Id be a lot calmer with Kingy staying in the role if he had a very experienced ex manager with him, not just Sadler. Someone who can come in say to him. Take the risk and drop Thomas and/or Ayew etc. he doesn’t have that and it’s a being thrown to the lions scenario. 3

The signings were who was available. The idea we've been consulting with a manager of Martin or Gerrard's standing (lol) and that they've directed us to these players would be wishful thinking for a well run club, let alone our absolute circus. 3

His tactics are shit though. Its just Marti ball again. If he mixes it up at the weekend then i'll rescind my comment, but if its the same formation with no plan to score then we will know he isn't the manager going forward. 3

Take the risk and drop Thomas and/or Ayew etc. he doesn’t have that and it’s a being thrown to the lions scenario. I think that could be what's being planned. All the rumours about Coleman coming here, were in relation to an appointment as the permanent Manager. I speculated that he could have been in Rudkin's mind as the potential Technical / Sporting Director. I remember reading an interview Coleman did after leaving Leuven, when he said he would now be interested in other, more general, Football Management work. His experience in 5 years with Wales, when he was responsible for recruiting & supervising the Coaching team, working with the Welsh FA, squad selection and negotiation with League clubs on player availability, as well as dealing with the media, gives him a wider CV, than just day-to-day team Coaching. The fact that Rudkin knows him (always an important consideration at the KP!), also leads me to think that, as well as being in the frame for the Sporting Director role, his past working relationship with King, could mean he'd help out on the Coaching side now. Would that have been less disgraceful? Marti should have been sacked earlier, but the fact that we find ourselves without a manager during the transfer window is not a reason to avoid bringing in desperately needed reinforcements. And the fact that all four signings seem to be loans would suggest we only recruited for the rest of this season anyway. Whoever takes the job on a permanent basis will presumably have a major say in the summer signings, of which there will be plenty. My belief though is that the coach doesn’t have anything like as much say as they used to, which when their job is on the line ( not our almost redundant recruitment team) is poor, and we’re getting worse because of it and our indoctrinated style of play, if you can call it that.

Dan Posted 3 February Posted 3 February Cifuentes was rubbish but don't think him and Martin really play the same style. 4
LCFCCKEANO Posted 3 February Posted 3 February King has come out and been very adamant it is too soon and he is only interim. Think they wanted to stick with Marti for the window and then focus on a manager but it became untenable, think the plan was always to finish the window then find our manager (shit plan) 1

It felt like Cifuentes was making it up as he went along. Clearly told the dwarf that he plays like Enzo in his interview. As much as I think Martin's view on the game is completely flawed, at least he has conviction in his methods. I genuinely don't think Cifuentes could explain to you what the idea was towards the end. 4

Pretty much agree with that. I couldn't really define what Cifuentes was doing. Was no obvious style whatsoever. Just 4-2-3-1 every game, no real speed to it, no link ups. Just a load of nothing. Wasn't dissimilar to Cooper.
lcfc_forever Posted 3 February Posted 3 February Playing without a no.9 or a proper pressing system were major issues. It meant teams could push up higher against us and put the team under more pressure. Hopefully the next manager will get the team working harder and play with a proper striker.
Popular Post Corky Posted 3 February Popular Post Posted 3 February 9 days on from sacking the manager and we appear to be no closer to knowing who they might want, let alone near to appointing them. It wasn't even as though Cifuentes' demise was swift or unexpected, you could probably trace it back to Blackburn to find when it looked like a real struggle. We really do just appoint, chuck a three year contract out and hope for the best. 5
Clever Fox Posted 3 February Posted 3 February What's the urgency. We have King for the forseeable who we know will at least have the Club at Heart. This would give us the time to get the appointment right this time. 2

We really do just appoint, chuck a three year contract out and hope for the best. We may be finding that the stronger candidates are reluctant to join while we have a points deduction hanging over us, and the ones that are willing to join despite the looming points deduction aren’t very appealing. Which means we either stick with King until the summer or appoint an interim, and are sounding out candidates for the temporary gig.
