Are we even allowed to appoint a new manager if Rowett is still under contract?

Yeah they just adjust the start date, or in Rowetts case finish date even though he probably is done already and the players on holiday

Feel like we’ve not touched on the worst case scenario here of this all going really well and us having to like Russell Martin eventually…. lollol

Could happen.

Doesn't make any sense. What is there to do in the middle of the season for the board? The best moment to take some time off would surely be between the season starting and Christmas.

Or at the end of a long and exhausting season?  When even the players are on holiday?

What stops them taking a few weeks off with the family at the end of April? Not exactly like they are going to be holidaying in Skegness, so weather certainly isn't a factor. Considering their main roles are centred around planning and performance to succeed during the season ahead, I'd say the football off season is the time they should be getting down to business.

So they’ve around the end of April they are probably finalizing the transfer targets for the season. It makes sense to take the holiday when they do. Personally I wish Rudkin would be on permanent holiday but it does make sense.

But this is the moment they're needed, not during the season. The season is the busy period for the players, and recruitment + planning is on pause awaiting results and the transfer window causing movement.

It’s like finishing the harvest and saying the farm can shut down, when the next job is preparing the fields and getting the next crop in. You don’t rest at the exact point the next season’s work needs setting up. You can rest once it starts growing.

Thats how I see it too.

At my place there is no annual longer than a day or two in June and November due to the nature of the work. I fully feel the top brass should be on job in the off season as thats largely where they are needed as opposed to say February March time when the football is in full swing.

Rare to see such a well-used analogy. Hats off to you.

If we don't get Martin we'll end up with a pound shop version of him. This is not an endorsement of Martin, by the way—just an observation of what is likely to happen.

Yeah exactly.  I think with the way we are run, people need to realise that it won’t be a good thing in the slightest if it falls through.

We would need a huge stroke of luck to not get it all wrong again

I think people dissing Russell Martin haven't fully grasped where we are as a club.

You could argue anybody NOT dissing Martin hasn't fully grasped where Martin is as a manager.

Given many on here would rather have a manager has never managed above League One, I think we have grasped it. If that

Martin isn't wanted through various factors. Snobbery isn't one of them. If that was the case, nobody would want Challinor.

Yep. The big problem with Martin—and the reason he’d be an unpopular choice at most clubs—is that he has carved himself a reputation as a rigid ideologue who has only one way of playing and stubbornly refuses to compromise even when it’s clear to everyone that it is not working. He has such enormous belief in own coaching ability that he thinks he can coach Championship players to play like Man City against PL opposition and achieve success with it. There’s nothing wrong with having a preferred way of playing provided it is combined with a pragmatic sense of what is achievable given the players you have and the opposition you’re facing. But if your ideals are more important to you than the team’s results, you’re going to come unstuck sooner or later.

It’s not snobbish to not want a manager like that.

I find it mildly amusing people seem to think a Director of football is not needed during the season.

right now, with no football and no players around  no transfer window, what is there for anyone to actually direct?

From what i have heard Martin been offered the job, its now down to him.

He has worked with Glover at Saints previously.

I also got shot down on here previously saying he had worked with our new Technical Director at Swansea.

Apparently he was there on a consultancy basis and is highly regarded by RM

I hope the Burnley gig is turning his head but i have a feeling hes holding out for a bigger payday.

Worrying times ahead

Scouting and recruitment, pre season plannig, in our case finding a new manager, managing contracts, long term planning.

This is usually the busiest period for directors of football. Sadly in our case May/June is when Rudkin seems to take his yearly holiday which is why we are always so unprepared.

Completely unfair reading of my point to the point of absurdity tbh. But to answer your question, right now they should be finalising scouting lists, talking to managers, putting feelers out to see what movements are likely to happen and what the consequences of that will be. If club x recruits player y then they will be open to sell player z. If manager M wants unfavourable terms then we can talk to manager C.

There's a million things to do right now, everything on the back end is allowed to move once the season is over and can't once the season is on. That's the point of transfer windows. Once September the first rolls around what are you expecting him to be doing? His choices have been made, everything is set. That's when he should **** off to wherever.
