Russell Martin reveals Leicester City start is ‘not too different’ to what he expected
Russell Martin has provided an honest assessment on Leicester City's start to the season

Josh Holland Leicester City correspondent

Russell Martin has claimed that Leicester City's start to the 2026/27 season is not too dissimilar to what he expected when he took over at the King Power Stadium.

City are 13th in League One after seven games and have won just two games, despite being favourites to win promotion back to the Championship.

After drawing at Notts County and losing at home to Burton Albion, Leicester improved in the goalless draw with MK Dons and beat Plymouth Argyle. However, momentum built came crashing down when Oxford United thrashed them 4-0 at home.

A well-earned win over Stockport County was followed by a frustrating draw with Barnsley last week to leave them on nine points. It has left many frustrated by the lack of success in the early weeks of the season.

Leicester signed 15 players after Martin was appointed and have moved on most of the relegated squad from last season. Several academy players have also come into the squad to establish themselves as first-team players, including Jayden Joseph, Will Alves and Sammy Braybrooke.

Martin, who has been criticised by some sections of the fanbase, believes the changes within the club and the process taking time are exactly what he thought would happen. "I know outside, people expect, Leicester in League One, it's going to be easy, but I think with the amount of change we've had, it's probably not too different to what I expected," he told LeicestershireLive when asked about his assessment of the season so far.

"Some brilliant moments, some tough moments, but a group that is really together and buying into it massively. So I'm really pleased with that. I love what we're building at Seagrave together, the staff and players.

"We have to transmit that energy now onto the pitch always, because, in moments, it's been really good. People can see what's coming and then we've let ourselves down in a couple of moments.

"But with the amount of change we've had, the amount of inconsistency in the team selection because of injury, new players coming in, they're not fully fit yet, we're not far off where we want to be.

"So whilst there is frustration from me about certain games we haven't won or haven't seen out, I'm also really, really happy with the group and what we're trying to do. So now I think we're going to get to where we want to get to, it's really simple, so we have to keep working. So probably not too dissimilar to what I thought it would be amidst all the change."

Yea, Yea, Yea!

"The exact same meaningless platitudes I served up last week, really.

And yes, I will say the same shit next week,  too."

"Hurting", physical or psychological, is supposed to stop you from doing something damaging. And by and large we don't do it again, apart from this guy. Genius.

He said in the press conference that they are treating it like any other game.

Why can’t managers say the opposite? We are treating it like the most important game of our lives. We are fully going all out to win at all costs because quite frankly….we have been shit.

Like everyone else I’m so fed up but the really kick in the nuts is that I don’t see anything to suggest that we can fix this. We may get a victory tomorrow but we will soon lose again. We are so crap. He needs wholesale changes. The likes of Thomas and BDCR are NOT the answer.

He probably spouted the same bollox at Rangers and Southampton. All gob, no talent.

Hmmmm

During a pre-match press conference on September 19, 2025, Martin admitted to BBC Sport that the massive volume of criticism "hurts" and "is difficult," adding that he felt "every bit of it as well." [1, 2]

After the Bournemouth Defeat (September 30, 2024): Following a 3–1 away loss where Southampton fell apart in the first half, Martin declared himself "so hurt and disappointed". He criticized his side for dropping into "self-preservation mode," lacking basic courage and aggression, and failing to respond to early setbacks. [1]

After the Ipswich Town Defeat (September 19, 2023): Early in his tenure, after a narrow home loss, Martin admitted that the team's recurring inability to react properly to in-game adversity was "what's really hurting us to be honest." [1]

After the 5–0 Tottenham Defeat & Sacking (December 15, 2024): In his final post-match press conference after a humiliating home thrashing by Spurs—which left Southampton bottom of the Premier League—Martin responded to fans chanting for his sacking. He acknowledged that while he understood the frustration, criticism of his managerial work "hurts a lot because you work so hard every single day." He was dismissed by the club shortly after the match. [1, 2, 3]

Walkout song?

We all understand what’s hurting us, in fact there’s only one person in the country that doesn’t know

What about Top, Rudkin, and McCarron?

Four.

I'm looking forward to the Head of Football Insight arriving, figuring out what on earth is hurting us and straightening all this stuff out.

It's a mystery!

He's basically a chilled out entertainer.

Did I hear right in his post match interview last week when Owyn asked him why we keep conceding similar goals he said he didn’t know??? How can he not see what everyone else can or is it bloody ignorance and refusal to change despite the evidence in front of his eyes? His teams have conceded the same type of goals for years.
