Kevin Keegan - RIP.

Sad news coming out that Kevin Keegan has passed. 
 

I’m sure this will resonate more with the older members of the forum that got to see him play. 
 

I’m sure many of us will never forget that epic rant in the midst of a premier league title challenge.

Just posted in gen chat that my first Leicester game was against Newcastle in November 1982. Lineker and English with ours and Keegan scored both of theirs.

 

An England legend and won back to back Ballon Dor's in '78 and '79

His interviews after the 4-3 defeat to Liverpool and his resignation from the England job summed him up. A genuine, open, up front bloke whereas we now have a lot of charlatans and snake oil salesmen.

 

Imagine there are a lot of Newcastle supporters around my age because of him and don't forget the job he did at Man City- not perfect but they certainly weren't any sort of force in the game back then and he began to stabilise them.

 

A huge loss. RIP.

Newcastle vs Liverpool next month, with only a few weeks having passed, will be a very emotional game.

I'd already posted when it was announced that he was ill that it was laudable that Keegan held his hands up and admitted that the England job was beyond him, which no one would do, nowadays.

 

Whilst many remember him for his managerial ups and downs, in his playing days he was made of muscle and really quite tough for a little bloke, and he scored and scored.

RIP - saw him play against Denmark in 1978. England won 4-3 and he was absolutely dominant. A great player.

As I was born in ‘72, my first awareness of football was in the playground at infant School in Cambridgeshire. Everyone wanted to “be” Keegan apart from one gobby lad who wanted to be Emlyn Hughes and another who was Terry McDermott. I became a Steve Heighway fetching the goal kicks and fizzing in crosses for the 45 Keegans waiting in the box. It was the best Football sticker, I bought the lettraset transfers where you recreate his best goals on the blank goalmouth sheet of card. I don’t think we understood transfers at that age but his Hamburg days bar the Forest final meant you saw less of him for a while, just England games. Then back in England at Southampton, by then I was in Leicester we drew them in the F.A. Cup, I finally got to see him. My dad kept pointing out World Cup winner Alan Ball but I was just fixed on Keegan. Then that era at Newcastle with McDermott, young Beardsley and Waddle, huge interest and momentum. His sides as a manager open and attractive. If only we had won the World Cup, he would have loved that, loved it ❤️ RIP

Some players are synonymous with him too- Rob Lee and Phillippe Albert who you only really associate with Kevin Keegan.

 

Quite fitting that Newcastle v Liverpool is the opening match.

RIP Kev loved him as a player and a personality massive impact on the game followed his career from Liverpool,  Hamburg, Newcastle etc, England and who could forget his Superstars performances

Kevin Keegan and John Toshack - what a fantastic pairing they were for Liverpool back in the day.
