Parafox Posted 13 March 2015 Posted 13 March 2015 Has Clarkson ever done anything for charity? Has he ever done anything for anyone apart from himself? Just wondering; it's not an attempt to slag the guy.
Guest MattP Posted 13 March 2015 Posted 13 March 2015 Certainly does a few things for Help for Heroes, did an auction a couple of years back at an event at the Park Plaza near Lambeth Bridge.

Guest MattP Posted 13 March 2015 Posted 13 March 2015 Whatever people think of Clarkson we should always remember he punched Piers Morgan so hard he scarred him - something we can all be grateful for.
Rincewind Posted 13 March 2015 Posted 13 March 2015 Matt my point was because those people you mentioned are high profile 'celebrities' they can get away with things ordinary people would not. If a factory worker punched his boss he would be up on a disciplinary charge. would receive at least a warning and it is one thing that can mean instant dismissal.
Finnegan Posted 13 March 2015 Posted 13 March 2015 Seems like the BBC have jumped the gun a bit on suspending him. The producer didn't even make a complaint. I wonder if the viewing figures have dropped a bit for this last series and the BBC are looking to use this as an excuse to cut the show. I'm sure the license fee will be reduced to reflect the money saved. As I've said earlier, it could well be a publicity stunt to ramp up interest. As for money saved, surely if any show makes the beeb a profit it's top gear? Astronomical amount of merch and it's sold to about every country on the planet?

It is not the celebrity that enables people to get away with things. If said factory worker was the only guy who knew how to operate a particular machine critical to the success of the business, or for example was a helicopter pilot with hundreds of thousands invested in his training, then you can bet they would keep their job just as well. Average bloke who can be replaces easily? Much more likely the boss thinks he is better off getting rid.
Guest MattP Posted 13 March 2015 Posted 13 March 2015 Matt my point was because those people you mentioned are high profile 'celebrities' they can get away with things ordinary people would not. If a factory worker punched his boss he would be up on a disciplinary charge. would receive at least a warning and it is one thing that can mean instant dismissal. It's not the fact they are high profile Ken - it's because they make people a lot of money and are almost irreplaceable in the job they do. That's the reason Clarkson has got away with aso much over the years, Top Gear is his project and it's made the BBC and it's bosses an absolute fortune over the years. Plenty of 'high profile' celebrities who are dispensable have been dismissed or been dropped from contracts etc for their behaviour. Factory worker's are ten a penny, pretty much anyone can do that job - Lionel Messi's aren't, he's the only man who can do his job. That's why the former would be sacked for the same thing the latter wouldn't.
Trav Le Bleu Posted 13 March 2015 Posted 13 March 2015 Just watched the episode where they strand Hammond on Wolf Mountain and I was thinking most of the way through it, "hurry up and get to him." I think Finners has been pretty much nail on the head - I can understand why he annoys people, but I don't know that he's annoying as some people make out and he has made some very amusing TV, but then again you clobber someone at work, you get reproved and if you're already on a last warning that's like going into a 50/50 slide tackle away to Man U when you're already on a yellow card. Though now it seems Clarkson reported himself... maybe he wants out without actually quitting? Anyhow, a few years ago I'd have been gutted if Top Gear were axed or the format changed in anyway, but now it's just a parody of itself. Meh.

As for money saved, surely if any show makes the beeb a profit it's top gear? Astronomical amount of merch and it's sold to about every country on the planet? Yes UK merchandise sales would probably slow (do that many people really buy that stuff?) but the international shows would have no reason to stop so the money would keep rolling in, only they'd save on the undoubtedly high costs of producing the UK show.
Trav Le Bleu Posted 13 March 2015 Posted 13 March 2015 Interesting point of note I got from a Guardian on-line article (I'm not a Guardian reader, nor any other reader - I view all press with equal suspicion of the personal agendas, having previously been a journo). Apparently his contract with the BBC expires at the end of the month. Dunno if it's been said in the thread - I haven't read every last post - but I thought it worth considering.

Alf Bentley Posted 14 March 2015 Posted 14 March 2015 Looks as if a potential replacement is available if Clarkson does go.... http://www.buzzfeed.com/patrickstrudwick/julian-clary-backs-calls-to-make-him-the-host-of-top-gear
Finnegan Posted 14 March 2015 Posted 14 March 2015 Hahahaha. They should do that as an April fools or something. IIt'd be hilarious.
Guest MattP Posted 18 March 2015 Posted 18 March 2015 Hahahaha. They should do that as an April fools or something. IIt'd be hilarious. I'd like to see a huge push for a female presenter - get a petition going at the Guardian etc - then unveil the new show being presented by Katie Hopkins. Speaking of which - easily my favourite letter from Monday's Guardian. Even I couldn't write this as a parody pisstake. • I feel jumping mad about the enormous sum of money that the BBC makes out of a programme that promotes the use of very fast cars, badly driven by macho men, when we should be cutting down carbon emissions because of climate change and building a society that respects all races and sexes. Julian Joachim Jr Shabadoo Posted 18 March 2015 Posted 18 March 2015 I saw a thing on Facebook doing the rounds - someone suggested Guy Martin as a replacement. Think that would actually work, love the guy. Mind you he's enthusiastic about everything he could be reviewing a written off Lada and he'd probably still say it's brilliant

The programme might plod along in some format with new presenters, but the viewing figures will plumet and it will eventually get canned as it won't be making money.

Exactly, it's too reliant on the camaraderie of the three presenters and any replacement would not have that, nor would the audience give them the time to. Would May and Hammond willingly continue with the show if JC wasn't there? I'm not so sure they would, though money talks. If JC left and they replaced I'd give it five years. If they all left and were replaced I'd give it three before the show plummeted under 1.5m a week and the whole value of the TG brand shrank to the point it wasn't worth it.
Darkon84 Posted 18 March 2015 Posted 18 March 2015 15,000 people so far, think tthis is the man for the job... http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-norfolk-31933041
yorkie1999 Posted 18 March 2015 Posted 18 March 2015 I think rowen atkinson would make the ideal replacement, for a start he knows about cars plus they could replace the stig with mr bean.. Don't know how he'd get on with a b b b b b barabus though.
