The questions were on hole-punched cards. You had to feed the cards through some device that could recognise the pattern of holes which would then, eventually, print out a sheet of the calculations and the answer.

 

I think it was called COBOL.

COBOL was (is) a programming language. COmmon Business Orientated Language. Sadly old enough to remember having to write programs in it

 

No idea what make the computer was though .

He didn’t name the student, it might not even be from this year- could be several years old and he might have even asked the student’s permission… you just don’t know..

Also, don't know about anyone else but I read it as someone asking about 1994 being history made him feel old. In no way did I see a dig at the student.
