I've received an unusual amount of SPAM e-mails during the last week and yesterday received this one..

Hello!

My nickname in darknet is orson01.
I hacked this mailbox more than six months ago, through it I infected your operating system with a virus (trojan) created by me and have been monitoring you for a long time.

So, your password from x[email protected] is xxxxxxx

Even if you changed the password after that - it does not matter, my virus intercepted all the caching data on your computer and automatically saved access for me.

I have access to all your accounts, social networks, email, browsing history.
Accordingly, I have the data of all your contacts, files from your computer, photos and videos.

I was most struck by the intimate content sites that you occasionally visit.
You have a very wild imagination, I tell you!

During your pastime and entertainment there, I took screenshot through the camera of your device, synchronizing with what you are watching.
Oh my god! You are so funny and excited!

I think that you do not want all your contacts to get these files, right?
If you are of the same opinion, then I think that $820 is quite a fair price to destroy the dirt I created.

Send the above amount on my BTC wallet (bitcoin): 1NXNt72qfMhPZDffUEqryCYpEUzyR6LmgH
As soon as the above amount is received, I guarantee that the data will be deleted, I do not need it.

Otherwise, these files and history of visiting sites will get all your contacts from your device.
Also, I'll send to everyone your contact access to your email and access logs, I have carefully saved it!

Since reading this letter you have 48 hours!
After your reading this message, I'll receive an automatic notification that you have seen the letter.

I hope I taught you a good lesson.
Do not be so nonchalant, please visit only to proven resources, and don't enter your passwords anywhere!
Good luck!

Now I realise it's a hoax but the worrying thing is that it was sent to me from my own e-mail address and the password they quoted is a password I regularly use (although it's not my e-mail/Outlook password)

My PornHub days are well behind me so I'm not worried about threat to send video stuff to my contacts but it is a slight concern that my password is known and the e-mail came from my e-mail address.

I'm running Anti Virus software and do regular scans etc. but even so.

Should I be concerned and more importantly, how do I stop it happening again?

If it’s a password you regularly use (I assume you use it on multiple sites?), it was probably hacked from one with low-level security and they are guessing (correctly) that it’s one you use on other sites (most do, big mistake). Your email account details were probably bought on the dark web - numerous big companies have been hacked in the last couple of years (Curry’s/PC World, Talk Talk, spring to mind.

Delete your email account (a ball-ache, I know) and never re-use passwords again.

You also should report it to the police.

Thanks mate. It did spook me a bit I must admit.

I’ve changed all my passwords last night and they’re all different and ‘strong’ now.

I wondered about reporting it but wasn’t sure of the process and how much hassle would be involved.

I’ll delete my email account as you suggested and start again.

I hope there’s nothing else to worry about if I follow those steps?

Thanks again mate

You should be fine.

The way it works is this: certain sites (online shopping from small retailers, for example) have very low-level security and are easily hacked; credit/debit card details are usually safe because they aren't kept, but login details (password and email address) are available. The hacker then tries the email/password combination on other popular sites with stronger security (eBay, PayPal, Banking etc) which occasionally pays dividends because so many people reuse passwords. This is a variation on that theme - they are banking that you are reusing your passwords and have something you want to hide (just playing the percentages - lots of people reuse passwords, lots of people use porn sites etc). Rest assured, they will have spammed this to many thousands of people, some of whom will have something they don't want making public (porn use, having an affair etc) and will probably be spooked enough to pay.

Reusing passwords isn't just foolish, it's pointless - it's just as easy to use a password generator, and a password safe to remember them for you.

Thanks bro, it's scary shit to technophobes like me.

Funnily enough the password quoted back to me on the e-mail is the one I used for Currys/PCWorld a few months ago. I've since changed it but realised I did use the same password for other smaller on-line retailers e.g. vape supplies, protein shakes etc.

Lesson learned and I'll be much more careful with passwords in the future

I had a missed parcel from Royal Mail on Thursday delivered a neighbour a few doors down (I don't know them). Have knocked on their door several times since and they aren't answering even though I'm sure they've been in. Left a note with my phone number earlier, and they've not called.

Who to phone first, the police or Royal Mail?

I might take fireworks tomorrow, let them off in their fvcking letterbox.

Annoyingly it isn't something I've ordered so I can't just claim back from a retailer, pretty sure it's a birthday present from someone

Ok.  If they are just fookin about ...   get Royal Mail to confirm where it was delivered, then, armed with that, get round there, show them the proof and demand they hand it over.

Cheers but the neighbour has just texted me, I went to go and pick it up and it was something I ordered from Amazon bleddy weeks ago, one of those USB plug socket things (worth about £1.99) and because it was so cheap and boring I forgot I'd ordered it in the first place. Must have come from China or something

What a waste of stress! At least my neighbours aren't complete bastards like I was beginning to suspect

Where's @Webbo gone these days? :dunno:

Hasn't posted since the 28th of October according to his profile and marked as a member not a mod. I've had run ins with him in the past, but obviously hope he's ok and there's nothing seriously wrong.

He resigned as moderator last week, I didn't really want that to happen but I have done as he wished. From what he said to me I think he's ok but just taking a break. Hopefully he will come back soon.

Anyone ever quit a job whilst not having anything else lined up? Prospective employers have been put off by my 3 month notice period recently. Dunno whether to quit in the hope that I find something in that time (or at least with minimal time out of work). Any advice/past experience is welcome.

I got made redundant a few years ago and so took the first job i was offered (bit of a panic really).  Big mistake. The company was run by a load of shitesters and made my life a misery, impacting on my health.  I walked out after a few months, with nothing else lined up.  It was a bit scary to say the least, but I had to have a word with myself and have faith in my ability.  I was back in employment after a while and never looked back.

There is work out there for the right people.  Have faith in yourself.  And if it doesn't feel right then it's not and just move on.

I’m currently contemplating this too.

Am I the only one who doesn't have a 5/10 year plan of where I want my life to be/go?

I've always been a fairly laid back individual and will take things in my stride. I have goals but I don't like to attribute time to them so specifically. Some things I want done in next couple of years and other things further along the line. But I've never been one to focus on 5/10 year plans - I think because there's always something that happens within that time which can throw the proverbial cat amongst the pigeons. And if something isn't done within 5 years, does that make you a failure? It shouldn't, but do people think like that?

I also have no plan
