Kent Posted 3 September 2011 Posted 3 September 2011 I was thinking about this the other day, does anyone else reckon that Vassell is underrated and maybe a tad under appreciated by us all? Not only is he quick but his touch and dribbling is quality and he can finish too. I remember during the Soton game at one point his touch was sublime from a long ball forward. I often see him making selfless runs off the ball that must create space for other players. That's without mentioning his experience and career that speak for them self. I'm not trying to preach about how people should take more notice of him because I'm guilty of it too, I've just recently realised that he's a very useful player to have and should be for another year or two.
21st Century Fox Posted 3 September 2011 Posted 3 September 2011 He's certainly an underrated musician...
Leicester Bob Posted 3 September 2011 Posted 3 September 2011 never really rated him but have to admit we missed him while he was suspended!
Fox92 Posted 3 September 2011 Posted 3 September 2011 Always rated him since he arrived. In my opinion, our most consistant player last season. He offers alot I think and chases lost causes constantly. Versatile as well which is always an added bonus.
sdb Posted 3 September 2011 Posted 3 September 2011 never really rated him but have to admit we missed him while he was suspended! Same.
ScouseFox Posted 3 September 2011 Posted 3 September 2011 Always rated him, no idea why he gets the stick he does. Gives us balance and "another dimension" at times.
Wasyls Pec Deck Posted 3 September 2011 Posted 3 September 2011 I rate him. I think he provides an important the link between the midfield and the forwards, which we missed in those two home defeats (I'm pretty sure he didn't play in either through suspension?) - the Reading game especially we were crying out a link between midfield and forwards, and I think he is the best we have in that role.
EnderbyFox Posted 3 September 2011 Posted 3 September 2011 Great player, always rated him- compared to Gallagher he's practically usain bolt
cc_star Posted 3 September 2011 Posted 3 September 2011 Overated. Unless you've lost the corner-flag, he can sniff one out from a long way away, no matter how many opposition players are surrounding him.
Kitchandro Posted 3 September 2011 Posted 3 September 2011 He's not underrated, I think most people see him for what he is, he's a useful sub and back up option and shouldn't be anything more in a promotion side. He's quick, skilful, but end product often lacks. Playing him out on the wing is a complete waste because he can't cross to save his life. He's not a goalscorer though either. Nugent and Beckford when both fit will play ahead of him.
Libertine Posted 3 September 2011 Posted 3 September 2011 I'll have no word said against Big Daddy V. Unless fair, as some comments above are. Important player for us though, don't think he should be a nailed on starter in every game but a great option to have.
Heart-Shaped Fox Posted 3 September 2011 Posted 3 September 2011 People dont really rate him either way because he is rarely ever played in his proper position. He is adequate on the wing, but evry time he has played in the striker role he has looked decent. Hope Sven plays him in his proper position more.
ozleicester Posted 3 September 2011 Posted 3 September 2011 Quality player, underated since his arrival by most fans and im still expecting him to have a HUGE year this year
lcfcsmith Posted 3 September 2011 Posted 3 September 2011 I agree, he's good when he's up front, but not useful when out wide in the 433 (but nobody is in that formation.) He's got two problems for me, he doesn't seem to utilise his pace enough, it's like he's playing at 80% so he can last the 90 mins. If he played at 100% and constantly made those selfless runs that create more space, I wouldn't mind if he only ever lasted 60 mins, because for those 60 mins, the CB's would be run ragged. His other problem is that he seems to be reluctant to shoot at times, at one point in the first half of the Soton game, the ball bounced to him on the right side of the area, it sat up nicely and where Nugent would blast it and test the goalie, he wanted to take the touch, meaning the opportunity went. But yeah, some of his runs (like his assist for Kingy's goal against Forest last year) are immense and will frighten any defence in this division... But for me, he doesn't do enough of these. Still a quality player and will be good for some competition up front.

Nugent and Beckford when both fit will play ahead of him. The main thing that has impressed me about Vassell has been his work rate. He chases down everything which, for a bit of an ol fella, is a good effort Agree with you completely about him being wasted on the wing.. He's a centre forward Sven! And much better in his natural position down the middle
irDeano Posted 3 September 2011 Posted 3 September 2011 I'll have no word said against Big Daddy V. I'm sure he could do a job for us
MPH Posted 3 September 2011 Posted 3 September 2011 I'm sure he could do a job for us well, he'd fill the goal...

Agree entirely - look at the way we have played since he has come back from his red card ban. Vassell is a really strong player for us whether up front in a two or on the right in a three - he has his weaknesses in his game which we are all too ready to point out but I feel he does not nearly get enough credit for his shifts.
muzzy1981 Posted 3 September 2011 Posted 3 September 2011 Think he will be quality up top with Beckford. He needs to play off a bigger guy up front. Don't reckon nugent is a shoe in yet
ajthefox Posted 3 September 2011 Posted 3 September 2011 Scares the shit out of defenders but lacks an end product, doesn't help that Sven more often than not plays him out wide. Would like to see him up front more often but can't really see it happening now we've got Beckford and Nugent.
STUHILL Posted 3 September 2011 Posted 3 September 2011 Frustrates me as I think he is better than he has been showing. Can beat his man all day long but just can't cross or shoot once he has done the hard work. I would play him a Beckford up top next game with Nugent out and see how he gets on as a more direct striker
Thracian Posted 3 September 2011 Posted 3 September 2011 Vassell is an excellent player technically but we never make the best of him with the result that his overall effect has been disappointing. Vassell not only makes his own contribution but I remember when he played in the middle how much easier it was for people like King to bounce a pass off him and lift their own game.. The thing about Vassell is that he needs fairly close support, but not too close so his space gets cramped. He also needs people running off him to make defenders uncertain. Vassell has a good shot but he's not got blistering long-term pace and needs people around him to help fashion the chance to shoot which, again, points to the need for off-the-ball running which is never our strongest suit Because he can play anywhere across the front, he needs complete freedom and people also need to be aware of what he's doing and to exploit the space he leaves, particularly the right-back. Nugent will be much missed movement wise. Beckford can help of course but some of the movement has to come from central midfield and from full-back and that's what concerns me.
ithuriel Posted 3 September 2011 Posted 3 September 2011 Vassell does very well for us but he is not a youngster or a prolific goal scorer.
Rusko187 Posted 3 September 2011 Posted 3 September 2011 Fantastic player for us, think he needs a chant.
Miquel The Work Geordie Posted 3 September 2011 Posted 3 September 2011 A tidy little player for us, been fantastic business considering we got him for nada.
